An early morning collision involving a pedestrian and an SUV in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood has left a woman dead, and police are urging caution on the roads.
According to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), the pedestrian fatality occurred at Main Street and National Avenue shortly after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 25.
“The Vancouver Police Department is again urging pedestrians and drivers to be careful on the road following the death of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle early Sunday,” said the VPD in a release.
“This is the second pedestrian struck within just a few days in the city.”

The 45-year-old woman was struck by an SUV travelling southbound and was thrown approximately 30 meters.
VPD stated that the woman was crossing at a marked crosswalk, though it is not yet clear if she was crossing with a walk signal at the time of the collision.
Police, paramedics, and fire crews responded to the scene of the incident, and the VPD Accident Investigation Unit was also brought in.
“The victim suffered significant injuries and resuscitation measures were performed, but she was pronounced dead at the scene just before 1 a.m. on Sunday,” said the VPD, which added that it was dark and raining heavily at the time.
“The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. Alcohol and substance use are not believed to be factors in the incident.”

It is the second pedestrian collision in Vancouver in three days, as a seven-year-old girl was injured late on Thursday, Oct. 22, when she was hit by a vehicle at East Pender Street and Victoria Drive.
The girl has since been released from hospital with minor injuries.
“This incident is an important reminder for pedestrians to exercise additional caution and for drivers to stay vigilant, especially during darker morning and evening commutes,” said Constable Megan Lui.
“With Halloween approaching and excitement building for trick-or-treating, we encourage families to plan ahead and remind children to use crosswalks, stay visible, and be aware of traffic when out in their neighbourhoods.”
A fundraiser has also been launched to help the family of a pedestrian killed in Vancouver in late September bring his body home.

“With heavy hearts, we are asking for your support following the tragic and unexpected passing of Cisco, RJay’s beloved husband,” said Alexa Vidal on the GoFundMe page, who is organizing on behalf of Roge Jessanee Dela Cruz.
“Cisco was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle in Vancouver. His passing has left RJay, their families, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him heartbroken. Losing someone so suddenly is incredibly difficult, and the family is now faced with the emotional and financial challenges that come with such an unimaginable loss.”
