NEW YORK — Aaron Glenn keeps promising better days.
The New York Jets keep finding new ways to lose.
Now the losses are piling up and so are the calls for his job.
Sunday’s 28-25 home loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins dropped the Jets to 2-5 and turned up the heat on their second-year coach. Glenn knows the noise is coming. After that performance, fan displeasure was practically shaking MetLife Stadium.
“We know it’s going to get noisy,” Glenn said Monday. “That’s just what happens in this league with any team, especially at this point when the record is not exactly where it needs to be.
“The most important thing for us is just blocking out everything on the outside. Just focus on who we have in this building and then just improving. And it all starts with how we go about practice. We get it, we understand that this league is about winning and we have to do a better job when it comes to that. And I promise you. We’re focused on that and we’re trying to do everything we can to get those wins.”
Sunday arguably marked Glenn’s worst loss as Jets coach. He is now 5-19 overall and 0-8 against AFC East opponents. If his seat wasn’t hot before, it certainly is now.
Fans booed throughout the afternoon, sending the Jets into the locker room at halftime and off the field after the game. With their season threatening to unravel before Halloween for the second straight year, the Jets have plenty of blame to spread around, starting with Glenn’s defense.
The coach who called defensive play-calling his “superpower” watched Miami score touchdowns on three of its first four possessions. Before Sunday, the Dolphins hadn’t held a lead all season.
Then came another clock-management mess. Trailing 14-7 with fewer than two minutes remaining before halftime and Miami threatening to score again, Glenn kept all three timeouts in his pocket.
Rather than stop the clock to preserve time for a potential answer, Glenn let it run. Willis scored on a scramble to put Miami ahead 21-7, and the Jets finally got the ball back with six seconds left.
They took a knee and were booed off the field with all three timeouts unused.
Since Glenn took over in 2025, the Jets have been outscored 107-6 in the final two minutes of the first half. They are also 4-9 in one-possession games during that span.
Glenn said the Jets work on two-minute situations every Wednesday and Thursday. The results haven’t reflected it yet.
“At the end of the day, we have to do a better job, I have to do a better job,” Glenn said. “That’s the most important part, making sure we’re trying to improve in those areas.”
The problems extend beyond Glenn’s defense and clock management.
The Jets still haven’t figured out how to consistently get the ball to their best offensive player, Garrett Wilson.
After showing frustration in the previous week’s loss to New England, Wilson was visibly upset again Sunday. CBS cameras caught him yelling with Geno Smith and passing game coordinator Seth Ryan nearby.
Wilson and Smith downplayed the incident afterward. The stat sheet was harder to dismiss. Wilson finished with two catches for 26 yards and no official targets in the first half.
“If you take a look at that situation and obviously in this game, they were trying to make sure to take Garrett out,” Glenn said. “That wasn’t the issue when it comes to our offense. I thought we moved the ball, I thought we scored points.
“But we know for a fact that every game, Garrett is our top priority to make sure we get the ball.”
Calling Wilson a priority and getting him the ball have become two different things. Meanwhile, the schedule offers little breathing room.
The Jets next face a Raiders team that has cooled after a 3-0 start. Then comes a trip to Kansas City before a home matchup against the Bills, who outscored them 65-18 last season.
In the locker room, players still cling to the possibility of a turnaround.
“We have a good opportunity going forward,” safety Dane Belton said. “When you really look at the good things that we’ve done and that it’s really promising. Obviously, that’s not what a lot of people want to hear, but it’s something we can build on.
“When you look at the opponents coming forward, in this league, every game is winnable. You don’t have to be an 11-win, 12-win team to make the playoffs. I think our goal is still reachable and attainable and that’s our focus.”
The Jets are still talking about the playoffs. Glenn needs to give them a reason to keep talking about his future.
