Former Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Otieno Mak'onyango has died while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
Makonyango, who served as Alego Usonga lawmaker between 1992 and 1997, died on the night of Sunday, October 25, as announced by current area MP Samuel Atandi.
In a statement mourning the veteran politician, Atandi said the constituency has lost a leader whose name will remain in history for years following reforms he introduced to his constituents when he served as their lawmaker.
"We have this evening lost Hon. Otieno Makonyango, the fourth Member of Parliament for Alego Usonga Constituency, who served from 1992 to 1997, while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital," Atandi stated.

"Alego Usonga has lost a former leader whose name will remain part of the constituency’s political history. May God comfort his family, friends, and the people of Alego Usonga during this difficult time," he added.
According to reports, the former lawmaker had suffered a stroke on October 3, 2026, and was admitted to a hospital in Ngong Town, where he received treatment in the High Dependency Unit (HDU), but was later transferred to the Nairobi Hospital.
Following his admission, a fundraising appeal was launched to help his family meet the rising costs of his hospital care and treatment.
Before serving as MP, Mak’Onyango was a veteran journalist and a key figure in Kenya’s second liberation struggle.
He worked as a journalist with The Standard newspaper before the attempted military coup of August 1982 changed the course of his life, when he was arrested and accused of involvement in the coup.
He endured years of detention without trial under the late President Daniel arap Moi’s regime, alongside other political detainees, including former Prime Minister the late Raila Odinga.
Following his detention, the former MP sued the government of former President Moi in 2003 over his detention, and was awarded Ksh20 million by the High Court in June 2012 for violations of his rights.
Some reports, however, indicate that the money was never paid.
In December 2023, The Standard reported that he was living in Kibiko, Kajiado County, facing ill health and financial hardship, with circumstances surrounding the Ksh20 million award remaining unclear.
