The World Series is where baseball teams either make history, break long curses, or face heartbreak. If you’re a new fan, knowing a bit of that background makes every pitch a lot more fun to watch.
The 2026 World Series is a perfect place to start. This year, the Milwaukee Brewers are taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. Milwaukee had a great regular season, winning 103 games, while Tampa Bay won 98. Neither team has ever won a World Series title, so no matter what happens, a first-time champion will be crowned. The Brewers already took Game 1 and Game 2 with a tight 3-2 and 5-4 wins, giving them an early lead in the best-of-seven series.

There is plenty of drama behind this matchup, too. Milwaukee hasn’t made it to the World Series since 1982. The Rays are making their third trip after coming up short in their first two. Meanwhile, traditional powerhouses are watching from home, the New York Yankees still lead baseball history with 27 total rings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers were trying to win their third straight title until Milwaukee swept them right out of the playoffs.
To help you get up to speed, here are 10 simple things every new fan should know about World Series history before diving into the rest of the 2026 games.
9. Brewers and Rays have little head-to-head history
Milwaukee and Tampa Bay have never met in the playoffs before this World Series. Their only recent meetings came during a three-game regular-season series from March 30 to April 1.
The Brewers won two of those three games. Although that gives Milwaukee a small advantage in their recent record, three games are not enough to predict a championship series. Both teams face a different challenge, with greater pressure and much less room for mistakes.
8. Game 1 showed why small moments matter
Milwaukee opened the series with a 3-2 victory. Christian Yelich delivered an RBI triple that helped produce two runs in the first inning. That early lead proved decisive.
Starter Jacob Misiorowski opened with a 103.5 mph pitch, the fastest ever recorded in a World Series game. He allowed one run on four hits over five innings, striking out three and walking one.
Tampa Bay had chances to respond but struggled with runners on base. The Rays went 0-for-6 in those situations, while their fifth through ninth hitters combined for just one hit in 17 at-bats.
Trevor Megill ended the game by striking out Jonny DeLuca with two runners in scoring position. Nick Martinez started for Tampa Bay instead of Drew Rasmussen and allowed two earned runs over five innings.
7. Rays are playing through period of change

Tampa Bay’s World Series story extends beyond the field. Hurricane Milton damaged Tropicana Field’s roof in 2024, necessitating major renovations. The Rays played their 2025 home games at the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa.
The franchise also entered a new era of ownership in 2026, with a new stadium planned for 2029. Despite those changes, the Rays won 55 home games during the regular season, matching Milwaukee’s total.
Games 3 through 5 are scheduled for St. Petersburg. Those games could prove important if Tampa Bay wants to use its home advantage to level the series.
6. Tampa Bay has lost both previous World Series appearances
The 2026 season marks the Rays’ third World Series appearance in their 29-season history. Their first trip came in 2008, when Philadelphia defeated them in five games.
Tampa Bay returned in 2020 but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers. That series still produced one of the most memorable moments in recent baseball history.
In Game 4, Brett Phillips hit a two-out single that ended with an unexpected walk-off play. The Dodgers misplayed the ball, allowing Randy Arozarena to stumble across home plate with the winning run.
The Rays reached the 2026 World Series by beating Cleveland in six ALCS games. Freddy Peralta was named ALCS MVP.

5. Milwaukee trying to rewrite its 1982 World Series story

The Brewers last reached the World Series in 1982. They lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games after taking a 3-2 lead in the series.
Milwaukee needed only one more victory to claim its first championship. Instead, St. Louis won Games 6 and 7 to complete the comeback.
Paul Molitor recorded a World Series record five hits in Game 1. Robin Yount also made history by becoming the only player with multiple four-hit games in a single World Series.
Now, 44 years later, the Brewers have another chance to win their first title. Their victory over the Dodgers in the 2026 NLCS also secured the franchise’s first National League pennant.
4. Milwaukee ended Dodgers’ bid for three straight titles
The Dodgers won the World Series in both 2024 and 2025. Their 2025 championship came against the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7, bringing their total to nine titles.
A third consecutive championship would have placed Los Angeles among a very small group of baseball dynasties. Milwaukee stopped that run by sweeping the Dodgers in the NLCS.
The result gave the Brewers a major boost heading into the World Series. Beating the defending champions also showed that Milwaukee could handle the pressure of October baseball.
3. Yankees set standard with 27 championships

The World Series dates back to 1903. Since then, no franchise has won more championships than the New York Yankees.
New York has captured 27 titles and reached the World Series 41 times since 1921. Its most recent championship came in 2009.
The St. Louis Cardinals rank second with 11 titles. The Dodgers, Athletics and Boston Red Sox have nine each, while the San Francisco Giants have eight.
The Yankees also hold the record for the longest championship streak. They won five straight titles from 1949 through 1953.
Only 15 teams have won consecutive World Series championships. The Dodgers’ titles in 2024 and 2025 added another name to that list before Milwaukee ended their latest run.
2. 2026 champion will be first-time winner
Five MLB teams entered this period still chasing their first World Series title: the Brewers, Rays, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies and Seattle Mariners.
Milwaukee and Tampa Bay are the two teams closest to changing that record. Their matchup is the first World Series since 1980 in which both clubs are seeking their first championship.
Seattle also holds a separate distinction. The Mariners remain the only MLB franchise never to reach the World Series.
For Milwaukee or Tampa Bay, winning in 2026 would change the franchise’s history forever.
