Former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant had a run-in with the law that he says resulted in him being handcuffed and held at gunpoint by police.
According to an OutKick report by Jackson Thompson, Bryant was involved in a road rage incident when another driver recklessly cut the ex-Cowboy off, leading to a confrontation after they both ended up in the same parking lot.
“He get out of the car, he talking crazy,” Bryant said, via OutKick. “I get out of the car, I’m talking my mess. And he go to threatening me.”
Bryant said the man insinuated “he’ll shoot me or whatever.”
“I told him, I said, ‘Hey, man, you pull that gun, I’m telling you right now, you better use it because if you don’t, I’m going to do something to you,'” Bryant added.
The other man eventually began recording Bryant on his phone, which did not sit well with the former Cowboys star.
“I knocked the phone out of his hand,” Bryant said. “And first thing he said was, ‘I’m fitting to call the police.’ I said, ‘Call them. You’re threatening me, so it’s all good. I have the right to protect myself.'”
Police arrived, and Bryant and the other men involved were handcuffed. Bryant said he was held at gunpoint until the situation was under control. Bryant said his girlfriend arrived with his children shortly after and recorded the whole situation.
“I was really more so concerned about my children, you know, looking at their dad, you know, being on the ground with a gun pointed at me,” Bryant said.
Both parties were separated as police investigated at the scene. Bryant alleged that police relied on the other man’s phone recording without investigating what preceded it. He said he asked officers to review surrounding surveillance footage, but was denied. Bryant said an officer told him he should have been “the bigger person.”
“I asked him, ‘How can I be the bigger person?'” Bryant said, noting the scene unfolded in front of his kids. “I told him I got every right to feel how I’m feeling.”
Eventually, everyone was released, and Bryant was given a citation for “Assault by Contact” and instructed to appear at Southlake Municipal Court on or before Nov. 20 at 5 p.m.
