A six-member committee formed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) will visit Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) tomorrow to hold talks with teachers, students, officials and employees in a bid to resolve a month-long stalemate.
The committee will hear their views and proposals and assess the situation before recommending measures to resume classes and restore normal academic activities, according to a UGC press release issued yesterday.
Headed by UGC member Prof Abdullah-Al-Mamun, the committee was formed on October 19 following a letter from the education ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Division dated October 18.
According to the schedule, the committee will meet teachers from 10:00am to 11:00am, students from 11:30am to 1:30pm, officials from 2:30pm to 3:30pm and other employees from 3:30pm to 4:00pm.
Classes, examinations and practical sessions at CUET have been suspended for over a month amid protests demanding the reinstatement of former vice-chancellor Prof Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem and the removal of his successor, Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam.
The deadlock began after Sayem was removed on September 21 and Shariful was appointed in his place. Students launched a shutdown the following day, with teachers, officials and employees later joining the protests.
Teachers and students have also questioned the committee’s effectiveness, saying it has no representative from CUET.
