(ANSA) - ROME, 27 OTT - Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said Tuesday that concern over street clashes was not over after the shocking youth riots and looting of October 17-18 and the subsequent clashes last Saturday, and his ministry was still on high alert for possible further unrest on future weekends and during a national strike called by grass-roots trade union USB this coming Friday.
"I am concerned that this is not the end of it, and that we must remain on high alert over the coming weekends as well," said Piantedosi, speaking from the stage at a convention for the 'Sud chiama Nord' (South Calls North) and 'Sindaci d'Italia' (Mayors of Italy) movements, while addressing the risk of further unrest.
"We have another event coming up on the 30th—next Friday—a general strike. I would caution against making inappropriate associations here; we have seen that established, mainstream organizations tend to distance themselves from these [radical] movements.
"Therefore, I have no reason to believe that the grassroots trade union organization that called this strike would be tempted to use these fringe groups of young people to carry out actions unrelated to the demands they are putting forward," he emphasized. (ANSA).
