September 2027 may seem a long way off, but several universities have already opened applications. For students hoping to secure a place at their preferred university, or explore scholarship opportunities, this may be a good time to begin.
It's October 2026. If you are planning to study abroad in September 2027, you probably think you have plenty of time. After all, there's almost a year to go.
Well, here's something worth knowing. Several universities have already started accepting applications for September 2027, and some important deadlines are closer than you might expect.
Take the UK, for example. Applications for undergraduate courses through UCAS opened for submission on 1 September 2026. The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses is 15 October 2026. For most other undergraduate courses, the equal consideration deadline is 13 January 2027.
Postgraduate applications are also opening. The University of Exeter began accepting applications for September 2027 master's programmes on 28 September 2026, while Queen Mary University of London opened its postgraduate application cycle on 14 September.
So, if you have been thinking of starting your university search sometime next year, perhaps it's worth reconsidering.

One of the advantages of starting early is having the time to make a sensible choice. Students often begin with a country or a university ranking, without really looking at the course itself.
Two universities may offer a master's in business analytics, for instance, but the subjects taught, entry requirements, fees and industry exposure could be quite different.
Then there are scholarships.
Many students assume they can think about scholarships after securing admission. Unfortunately, that is not always how it works. Some scholarships have separate deadlines, while others require students to hold an offer before they can apply.
Queen Mary University of London, for example, has announced a £6,000 Global Talent Scholarship for eligible international postgraduate students joining in September 2027, with applications scheduled to open in October 2026.
Applying early does not guarantee a scholarship, but it may give students time to understand the requirements and prepare a stronger application.
Let's now see what about students who have not yet completed their bachelor's degree?
They need not necessarily wait for their final results. Many universities consider applications from students in their final year and may issue conditional offers based on predicted or available academic results. The final qualification must then meet the conditions of the offer.

Of course, not every country follows the same application calendar. Germany, for instance, generally operates on summer and winter semesters, with application periods that differ from those in the UK. Students considering multiple destinations need to plan accordingly.
There is also the practical side of preparing documents, arranging academic references, taking language tests where required and discussing finances with parents. None of these should ideally be rushed at the last minute.
Starting early doesn't mean you need to make every decision immediately. It simply gives you more time to explore universities, compare courses and understand the costs before committing.
September 2027 may still be several months away, but when it comes to choosing where and what to study, having a little extra time is rarely a disadvantage.
