Israel Elections: Netanyahu Faces Stiff Benny Gantz Challenge Amid War
Israel heads into a crucial parliamentary election with over 7.3 million voters set to decide the composition of the Knesset. Incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a formidable challenge from former Israel Defense Forces chief Benny Gantz. The election takes place against the backdrop of regional conflict, the October 7 attacks, national security issues, and rising living costs. Opinion polls suggest that neither Netanyahu's Likud-led bloc nor Gantz's coalition is positioned to clearly cross the majority mark of 61 seats in parliament. Potential outcomes range from a coalition or national unity administration to a minority government or further reelections, with Arab parties potentially holding significant leverage despite both major blocs distancing themselves from direct alliances. International attention remains fixed on the election outcome, including endorsement for Netanyahu from US President Donald Trump, as voters weigh continuity against calls for leadership change amidst regional security concerns.
