A St. Louis man has admitted he signed up to help rob a family over stolen Bitcoin. He then walked away before anything happened, apparently because the target’s house had security cameras.
Martel Williams, 27, pleaded guilty on October 26, 2026, to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery. The case connects to one of the stranger crime stories of recent years, in which a massive Bitcoin theft set off a chain of violent attempts to grab the loot.
A plan that never left the driveway
The scheme Williams joined targeted the parents of a suspect in a major Bitcoin theft. The goal was a home invasion meant to recover approximately 4,100 Bitcoin.
That stash was valued at around $245 million at the time. It had been stolen from a Genesis creditor in August 2024.
Williams was part of a Missouri crew that also included Sedric Louis and John Davis. All three were charged in a May 2026 indictment.
The trio never carried out the robbery. They abandoned the plan over worries about security cameras at the location.
Backing out did not erase the legal exposure. Conspiracy charges cover the agreement to commit a crime, not just the crime itself, which is why Williams is pleading guilty to something that never fully happened.
He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Williams was arrested on July 17, 2026, and remains free on bond while he waits for a sentencing hearing that has not yet been scheduled.
The Florida crew finished what Missouri started
The parents did not escape harm. On August 25, 2024, a separate group in Florida carried out a violent carjacking and kidnapping of the couple.
The federal investigation has produced a steady stream of guilty pleas. Saif Faiq, a participant in the plot, pleaded guilty in June 2026.
Six people from Florida have also entered guilty pleas, along with a man named Adam Iza. Williams now joins that growing list.
How a social-engineering heist turned physical
The original Bitcoin theft did not involve kicking in doors. It relied on social engineering, a technique where attackers manipulate people into handing over access, rather than cracking systems directly.
What happened next shows the darker side of that kind of score. Once a large Bitcoin haul is linked to identifiable people, those people and their families can become targets for criminals who want a cut.
Security researchers sometimes call this a “wrench attack.” The phrase refers to the idea that no amount of encryption protects you if someone is willing to threaten you physically until you hand over access.
The detail about security cameras deserves attention from anyone thinking about personal safety. In this instance, a basic home security measure appears to have been enough to turn away a group of would-be robbers.
That will not stop every determined attacker, as the Florida carjacking shows. Still, it suggests that visible deterrents can raise the cost of an attack enough to change some criminals’ minds.
The next milestone for Williams is sentencing. With a 20-year maximum on the table and no date set, the outcome will offer a signal about how courts treat people who join these plots but bail before the violence starts.
