Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has reportedly fled to the United States after his defeat, defying a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports.
On Monday, the court ordered Bolsonaro to hand his passports over to police within 24 hours as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering, which he denies (BBC).
Police in Brazil said they have cancelled Bolsonaro’s passports and are checking border crossings to establish if he may have travelled to neighbouring Argentina (BBC).
But reports have emerged that Bolsonaro has left on a plane bound for the US, where he plans to request political asylum from the Trump administration (The Guardian).
Bolsonaro’s father, former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro, also went to the US after refusing to concede to Lula in 2022. He eventually returned to Brazil and was given a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup (Reuters).
