There was a plethora of options on the table.
Moving the Atlanta Hawks-Cleveland Cavaliers game to another day.
Moving the WNBA Finals Game 6 to another day.
Moving Game 7 (if there is one) to another day.
Moving the Atlanta Dream back to their regular season venue, Gateway Center Arena, which holds around 3,500 people.
Instead, after a weekend of emergency negotiations, the league has decided, yes, they’re going to move Game 6 of the Finals between the Dream and the Golden State Valkyries… to a different time in order for Atlanta to play in the much larger 17,000-seat State Farm Arena: 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
Right in the middle of the work day.
The day will be a double-header for the Dream and the Hawks, whose game has been moved to 8:00 p.m. ET.
While this is supposedly a happy update, it coincides with fans’ work week, which may leave the Dream at a disadvantage when it comes to filling up the arena. It’s been 13 years since the Dream last appeared in the Finals, so fans have been selling out State Farm to witness history. Especially when it comes seeing to Atlanta superstar Angel Reese.
“They sold out the Arena, 17,000, man,” former NBA Hawks star Joe Johnson said of watching the Dream battle their way to a tied 2-2 series. “They probably be outdoing the damn Hawks now."
WNBA fans – both Dream and Valkyries fans -- aren’t thrilled with the move, especially since true basketball fans want both teams to have every advantage possible, which makes for a more satisfying game AND win.
“It’s gonna be really embarrassing if they went out of their way to play at the big arena, but because they scheduled it at the worst possible time, less than 3,500 people show up anyway,” WNBA fan Valerie tells Newsweek.
