There are great hockey teams, great hockey analysts and great hockey broadcasts.
Then there is the Carolina Hurricanes’ broadcast, where Mike Maniscalco, Tripp Tracy and Hanna Yates make watching hockey feel like an event.
Is Maniscalco the best play-by-play announcer in hockey?
We’re making the case.
And if you disagree, that’s fine. But you might want to spend a little more time watching Hurricanes Hockey Network before making that argument.
Mike Maniscalco Makes Every Shift Matter
Play-by-play is one of those jobs that looks deceptively easy until you try to do it.
The puck moves at ridiculous speed. Players change on the fly. Defensive breakdowns happen in a blink. A harmless-looking possession can turn into a breakaway before a viewer finishes a sentence.
The announcer has to identify the action, explain the moment and keep the audience engaged without drowning out the game.
Maniscalco does that while bringing an unmistakable Carolina personality to the broadcast.
He understands that hockey is a game of momentum. He knows when to let a moment breathe and when to raise the energy. He gives viewers the information they need without making every shift sound like a desperate attempt to win an audition.
Most importantly, he sounds like someone who genuinely loves calling Hurricanes hockey.
That matters.
A great announcer does not merely tell you what happened. A great announcer helps you feel like you were there.
The Tripp Tracy Chemistry Is a Cheat Code
Let’s address the giant, enthusiastic, occasionally unhinged elephant in the broadcast booth.
Tripp Tracy.
Tracy is one of hockey’s most recognizable local analysts, bringing decades of Hurricanes knowledge, memorable stories and Caniac energy to the broadcast. Maniscalco is the perfect partner because he can guide the action while allowing Tracy’s personality to shine.
The chemistry feels natural rather than manufactured.
Maniscalco gives the game structure. Tracy adds analysis, history and entertainment. Neither needs to turn the broadcast into a one-man show.
That balance is harder to achieve than it looks.
The best broadcasting partnerships have a rhythm that develops over years. Maniscalco and Tracy have built one that feels distinctly Carolina, even when the Hurricanes are playing thousands of miles from Raleigh.
And when the game gets wild? That’s when the combination really works.
The calls, reactions and commentary become part of the experience. Fans aren’t just watching the Hurricanes. They’re watching the Hurricanes with their people.
That’s what a great local broadcast should be.
Hanna Yates Completes the Picture
A great booth is important. A great broadcast team is even better.
Hanna Yates brings energy, sharp reporting and a welcoming presence to the Hurricanes’ coverage. Her interviews and intermission segments connect viewers with the players and stories beyond the scoreboard.
She complements Maniscalco and Tracy without trying to imitate them.
That makes the entire production stronger.
The same goes for Shane Willis and the work happening behind the scenes. A polished broadcast requires a full team operating on tight deadlines, often while the game itself is moving at full speed.
Maniscalco is the central voice of the action, but HHN benefits from having a crew that understands how to work together.
It’s a complete package, and Caniacs should appreciate what they have.
The Hurricanes Got Their Man
Maniscalco is entering his 11th season with the Hurricanes organization and his seventh as the team’s television play-by-play announcer.
Before taking over the primary role, he hosted pregame programming, conducted interviews and produced digital content. He also spent years hosting pregame and postgame radio shows in Raleigh.
In January 2026, the National Sports Media Association recognized him as North Carolina’s Sportscaster of the Year for 2025.
That honor is well deserved.
He has grown into the role while becoming a familiar voice for a fan base that cares deeply about its team. The Hurricanes have a distinctive identity, and Maniscalco understands how to convey it without losing sight of the game.
The launch of Hurricanes Hockey Network for the 2026-27 season gives that familiar broadcast crew a new home.
For fans, the important part is that the voices they know are still there.
The network name may be new. The channel may change. The distribution arrangements may evolve.
But when the puck drops, Maniscalco is still calling the action.
And that’s a pretty good reason to tune in.
Is He Really the Best in Hockey?
There are legendary voices across the NHL. Every fan base has its favorites, and play-by-play rankings are inherently subjective.
We’re not pretending there’s a scientific formula that settles the debate.
But Maniscalco belongs in the conversation about what makes a local hockey broadcast great.
He brings preparation, personality, pacing and chemistry. He works with an analyst who knows the franchise inside and out. He is supported by a crew that gives the broadcast life beyond the rink.
And he calls games for a team whose fans bring plenty of passion of their own.
The best play-by-play announcer isn’t necessarily the loudest person in the booth. It isn’t automatically the broadcaster with the most famous catchphrase or the biggest national profile.
Sometimes, it’s the person who makes you want to keep watching even when your team is having a rough night.
Sometimes, it’s the voice that makes a Tuesday night against a nonconference opponent feel like the most important game on television.
For Hurricanes fans, Maniscalco has become that voice.
Long Live HHN
The Hurricanes have built something worth celebrating with their broadcast crew.
Tracy brings the knowledge and personality. Yates brings the reporting and energy. Willis adds another layer of hockey insight. The production team pulls everything together.
And Maniscalco calls the game.
Could another fan base make a compelling argument for its own announcer? Absolutely.
But if you’re a Caniac, why spend your time worrying about somebody else’s booth when yours is this good?
Mike Maniscalco deserves his flowers. His work has earned recognition, his chemistry with Tracy is outstanding and his voice has become part of the Hurricanes experience.
So turn on HHN, settle into the couch and enjoy the show.
The puck is dropping. Tripp is ready. Hanna is probably sprinting back from the ice.
And Mike Maniscalco is about to make another night of Hurricanes hockey sound like the place to be.
BEST BROADCAST IN HOCKEY? WE’RE SAYING YES.
WOOOOOO! LONG LIVE MIKE MANISCALCO. LONG LIVE TRIPP TRACY. LONG LIVE HHN. GO CANES! 🌀
