The NBA just handed Kalshi and Polymarket a coveted seat at the table, naming both platforms preferred prediction-market exchanges on Oct. 26, 2026, while securing something traditional betting partnerships rarely offer: direct oversight of which contracts can be traded.
Key Takeaways
- The NBA named Kalshi and Polymarket preferred prediction-market exchanges on Oct. 26, 2026.
- Kalshi will use official NBA data from Sportradar and cooperate with the league on suspicious trading.
- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver favors consistent national oversight as states contest prediction markets.
NBA Partners With 2 Prediction Market Giants
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is bringing two major prediction-market platforms into its commercial ecosystem, granting Kalshi and Polymarket access to official league data, trademarks and advertising opportunities during game broadcasts.
The agreements, reported by ESPN and The Athletic, give the NBA approval rights over categories of contracts the exchanges can offer. That’s a notable departure from conventional sportsbook arrangements, where leagues generally exercise less direct influence over available wagers.
In its Oct. 26 announcement, Kalshi explained how official data will shape trading outcomes: “Through this partnership, we’ll integrate official NBA data, distributed by Sportradar, into the operation and settlement of authorized NBA markets on Kalshi.” The exchange also emphasized its business model, stating, “We don’t win when you lose, and we don’t limit people simply because they win.”
Insider Trading Restrictions Follow NBA Into New Markets
The NBA isn’t opening the floodgates to every conceivable basketball contract. Restrictions covering certain single-play propositions, low-minute player markets and long-shot parlays will extend to prediction markets. Players and other covered league and team personnel are prohibited from trading NBA event contracts. Kalshi and the NBA will share integrity information, flag suspicious trading and cooperate on investigations.
The prediction marketplace giant Kalshi highlighted its existing surveillance partnership with IC360, athlete protection measures through Signify and nationwide self-exclusion tools designed to protect consumers. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently addressed the appeal of consistent oversight, explaining:
“Frankly, from at least the NBA standpoint, we have roughly 40 different jurisdictions regulating us right now. So to have a consistent policy nationally, I think would be in our best interest.”
The NBA also announced a memorandum of understanding with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), establishing another channel for regulatory cooperation.
Prediction Markets Face Regulatory Fight Despite NBA Endorsement
The NBA’s decision follows the National Hockey League’s partnerships with both exchanges and Major League Baseball’s agreement with Polymarket. The basketball league is also expanding its Draftkings relationship to cover prediction markets, with similar arrangements anticipated involving Fanduel and Fanatics.
Yet the regulatory battle is far from settled. New York has pursued litigation challenging sports event contracts, while a New Jersey dispute has pushed the jurisdictional question toward the U.S. Supreme Court. The NFL has taken a more cautious approach. Kalshi argues that nationwide regulation provides consistency across state lines, allowing exchanges and leagues to coordinate investigations and consumer protections.
For prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket, NBA recognition delivers commercial legitimacy and access to official basketball information. For the league, it offers greater visibility into an emerging market that already attracts sports traders. The contradiction is difficult to miss: The NBA is embracing prediction markets just as regulators continue fighting over who gets to govern them.
