Pat McAfee has built an empire by being the loudest guy in the room.
Now, some college kids seem to be asking a very reasonable question:
What if we just let the man wear a shirt?
The ESPN personality’s latest shirtless stunt at College GameDay in Utah has ignited a social media roast, with students calling his routine corny and questioning why he keeps taking his clothes off on national television.
And honestly? The memes are writing themselves.
THE MEME THAT HAS PAT MCAFEE FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE 😂
The University of Utah’s social media team posted a video featuring students giving their impressions of McAfee. One called him corny. Another joked that he should stop taking his shirt off in front of college students.
McAfee apparently saw the video before Saturday’s broadcast.
Then came the chants.
Utah fans started yelling for him to take his shirt off. McAfee initially insisted he would keep it on, declared he was not a puppet anymore, and promised a fully clothed broadcast.
Naturally, he took it off anyway.
Former Alabama coach Nick Saban even helped him with the shirt, because apparently ESPN has turned the College GameDay set into a combination of a football analysis desk and a professional wrestling entrance ramp.
COLLEGE KIDS ARE STARTING TO ROAST THE GUY
Here is what makes this particularly funny: McAfee’s entire brand is built around being the guy who brings the energy.
He shouts. He celebrates. He jumps around. He turns ordinary college football Saturdays into full-blown spectacles.
That worked brilliantly when the audience was ready for the chaos.
But some younger fans are now pushing back against the very routine that made him famous. The Utah students’ video became a viral talking point, and social media reactions included complaints that the shirtless bit has become repetitive.
The generational irony is spectacular.
A man whose job is to connect with college football’s famously energetic student sections is getting roasted by the very demographic he is trying to entertain.
Imagine showing up to a campus, trying to become the main character, and discovering that the students have already made you the punchline.
That’s rough.
THE PROBLEM ISN’T THAT PAT IS LOUD
McAfee deserves credit for bringing personality to sports broadcasting. He is successful, energetic and undeniably capable of commanding attention.
But there is a difference between being unpredictable and becoming predictable through unpredictability.
When every weekend carries the possibility of another shirtless performance, the stunt starts to feel less like a spontaneous moment and more like a recurring segment nobody ordered.
The joke eventually becomes the joke about the joke.
And when the audience can predict the punchline before kickoff, even the wildest stunt can start feeling like a rerun.
College football already has marching bands, rivalries, mascots, legendary traditions and thousands of students losing their voices before noon.
Maybe the shirt doesn’t need to come off every time.
ESPN, PLEASE LET THE MAN KEEP HIS SHIRT ON FOR ONE SATURDAY
Nobody is calling for McAfee to become a silent analyst in a gray suit. His personality is a major reason he has become such a prominent sports-media figure.
But imagine the content possibilities if he showed up fully dressed and simply delivered an outrageous football take.
No shirt removal. No chair-assisted wardrobe malfunction. No Saban acting as an emergency costume department.
Just football.
The internet might actually experience a brief period of peace.
Of course, McAfee will probably read the criticism, laugh at it and find another way to make himself the center of attention next weekend. That is what he does.
And judging by the reaction, the debate is not going away anytime soon.
Pat McAfee is still one of sports media’s biggest personalities. But has the shirtless routine officially jumped the shark?
College football fans, settle this: Is McAfee’s chaos what makes GameDay great, or are the students right that the bit has gotten old?
And most importantly, can we get one Saturday where Nick Saban doesn’t have to help a grown man get dressed?
