The Green Bay Packers lost to the Detroit Lions 20-17 on Sunday on a field goal as time expired, and several of the game’s biggest moments came down to penalties. Afterward, some of the Packers didn’t hold back.
Head coach Matt LaFleur was careful about what he said, but All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney ripped the officiating, calling much of it “bulls***” and saying that the flags are “killing” the Packers. McKinney even said he’d rather take a fine than stay quiet.
Costly Calls
The Packers were flagged for two more roughing the passer penalties on Sunday, bringing their total to eight through seven games. One of those came on Karl Brooks during Detroit’s game-winning drive, which then went 71 yards to set up Jake Bates’ winning kick.
Even Tom Brady wasn’t buying it on the Fox broadcast.
“That’s definitely not roughing the passer,” Brady said, via Awful Announcing.
Green Bay was also flagged for unnecessary roughness in the third quarter when Devonte Wyatt tackled Amon-Ra St. Brown, who appeared to go down before getting back up and running again.
‘I’m Not A Big Fan Of The Refs’
Needless to say, the Packers were not too pleased with the officiating after the game.
“I don’t know how the NFL’s going to treat it, but I’m not a big fan of the refs right now,” McKinney said, via ESPN. “I don’t think it’s great officiating, if I’m being completely honest. I think it’s bulls*** a lot of the times.”
“It’s annoying even talking about it because these are critical drives throughout the game, and we might have a drive where we’re getting stops but you’re calling penalties and it’s like, ‘this is not a penalty,'” he continued. “To me, it just don’t really make any sense, and it’s killing our momentum, it’s killing our drives, and it’s kind of [messing] up the games, if I’m being honest.”
He also made it clear that he wasn’t worried about getting a fine as a result of his comments.
“I would rather get fined and try to help my team out because I see what’s going on, and it’s killing us,” McKinney said. “We all see it. We all see what’s going on.”
