Spanish soccer star Lamine Yamal hit the 70th Ballon d’Or Ceremony red carpet in Chanel at the Palladium Theatre in London on Monday night. The 19-year-old went on to collect his third consecutive men’s Kopa Trophy, becoming the first player to win the award three times.
The athlete did a callback to the French luxury fashion house’s spring 2026 ready-to-wear collection, sporting a monochrome black suit with a colorful muted pink wheat sheaf-style brooch on his single-breasted suit jacket.
The brooch was undoubtedly the hero accessory of Yamal’s red carpet look and recalled the oversize florals that appeared throughout creative director Matthieu Blazy‘s first collection for Chanel. “Describing his first season as a ‘roller coaster,’ he said he was initially overwhelmed by the archive,” Joelle Diderich wrote in WWD’s review of Blazy’s spring 2026 collection.
“It was too much beauty, almost, and I didn’t know where to take it from,” Blazy said, per Diderich’s review. “The good thing with the codes of Chanel is that you can also reduce them. They still look like Chanel.”
Looking through the archive, Blazy also recalled a familiar motif in the wheat sheaf. The designer “said he was inspired by wheat sheaves, one of Coco’s many lucky charms,” Diderich wrote in WWD’s review. “Gold versions dangled from a black sack dress, and they appeared as fuzzy allover embroidery on an oatmeal tweed coat.”
The spring 2026 ready-to-wear collection made its runway debut during Paris Fashion Week in October 2025. With Blazy at the helm, following the departure of Virginie Viard, the collection introduced a new interpretation of the house’s familiar design codes, including its floral accessories.
Yamal himself has been embraced by Chanel, sporting designs to the Spanish national team’s training camp back in June, among other occasions. The athlete joins the likes of Ayo Edebiri and Nicole Kidman as famous faces associated with the brand.
The 70th Ballon d’Or Ceremony was held in London on Monday night and celebrated football stars from across the globe. Yamal was honored with the Men’s Kopa Trophy (Young Player) for the third consecutive year, while the Men’s Ballon d’Or was awarded to Harry Kane of Bayern Munich/England.
