The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called for the immediate release of an NDC political mobiliser, Rilwan Olawale, reportedly arrested at his residence in Lagos.
Obi, in a post on his verified X handle on Monday, condemned the reported arrest, describing it as an attack on democratic values and opposition voices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also criticised the alleged use of security agencies to harass and intimidate political opponents, warning that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.
“Stop destroying the democracy that made you. President Tinubu has remained a huge beneficiary of our democracy and should not be brazenly destroying it by encouraging and facilitating violence,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra State governor said political thuggery and violence should not be allowed to become tools for suppressing opposition voices.
He warned that continued arrests and intimidation of political actors could set the country’s democracy backwards and place the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections at risk.
Obi therefore urged the authorities to respect democratic freedoms and ensure that security agencies operate within the law, particularly in dealing with political opponents.
