Farewell tours usually bring warm tributes and standing ovations. This one brought a verbal punch instead. Two famous voices from different sports are heading for the exit, and one of them just took a swing.
Sports fans love a good feud, especially when legends are involved. The best ones mix humor with real tension. This story has plenty of both, along with a lesson about how famous stars say goodbye.
The radio moment that sparked everything
On Wednesday, October 21, Barkley joined Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio. Schein compared Barkley’s planned retirement with Rodgers’ farewell season, prompting Barkley to take a pointed jab at the Steelers quarterback.
Barkley is 63 and says the 2026-27 season could be his last after more than 25 years as a television analyst. Rodgers is 42 and has explicitly said he will retire after the 2026 NFL season. Both careers may therefore be approaching their final chapters.
Barkley’s criticism was not about Rodgers’ performance on the field. Instead, he took issue with the way Rodgers has publicly discussed people from his past as his playing career winds down.
What Barkley actually said about Rodgers
Barkley said he would not mimic Rodgers on his way out. In his words, “I’m not gonna bury everybody going out the door like Aaron.” The line was short and blunt and impossible to miss.
He also said he would not burn every bridge or talk bad about his exes. Barkley is promising a clean goodbye with no scorched earth. That pledge creates a very clear contrast with Rodgers now.
The comment also fits Barkley’s style. He has spent decades saying what he thinks on air. Few people expected him to hold back just because retirement is near, especially with a live radio microphone nearby.
Rodgers’ podcast comments started the firestorm
Last month, Rodgers appeared on teammate Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast and spoke critically about former fiancée Shailene Woodley and former girlfriend Danica Patrick. He also criticized two former Packers teammates without naming them, comments widely interpreted as referring to Greg Jennings and Jermichael Finley.
Rodgers also called ESPN “a gutless organization” while criticizing what he viewed as inconsistent coverage of certain stories. He referenced previous comments he had made about ESPN during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
The wide-ranging interview touched on Rodgers’ former relationships, former teammates, and his criticism of ESPN. Barkley later used those public comments to contrast Rodgers’ farewell approach with his own planned departure from television.
Rodgers is still playing at a high level
On October 11, Rodgers threw 3 touchdowns as the Steelers beat the Colts 34-22. It was his 3rd consecutive game with at least 3 touchdown passes, his first such streak since 2021.
That 2021 season ended with Rodgers winning his 4th NFL MVP award. Some fans now wonder why a quarterback playing this well would leave. Rodgers insists this is his final year, so the countdown keeps running all season.
Good play also makes the farewell story more dramatic. Barkley can joke about retirement from a studio chair. Rodgers must still win games while every interview gets replayed and picked apart by fans and reporters.
Barkley built a career on honesty
Barkley won the NBA MVP award in 1993 and earned 11 All-Star selections during his career. He retired from professional basketball in 2000 after establishing himself as one of the league’s most accomplished players and later entered the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Barkley played 16 NBA seasons without winning a championship. His individual résumé remained exceptional, including 11 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA selections and the 1993 MVP award. His “Round Mound of Rebound” nickname also became closely associated with his playing career.
After retiring, Barkley turned his outspoken personality into a successful broadcasting career. He joined Inside the NBA in 2000 and became one of the show’s best-known analysts, frequently offering blunt opinions about players and teams.
Barkley has teased retirement before
Barkley has announced or discussed retirement repeatedly over the years, which has made his latest planned departure a familiar topic in sports media.
He previously said he intended to retire around age 60 but continued working as TNT navigated changes to its NBA rights. In 2022, Barkley signed a 10-year contract extension that he later disclosed was worth $210 million. He also announced a retirement plan in 2024 before reversing that decision.
That history explains why his newest retirement timeline has attracted some skepticism. Barkley maintains that the 2026-27 season could be his last, although he has acknowledged that Ernie Johnson’s plans could affect his decision.
Ernie Johnson could decide Barkley’s future
Barkley told Bill Simmons that he and Ernie Johnson are a package deal. If this is Johnson’s last season, it will be his last too. Johnson has not announced any decision about his future yet.
Then came the twist. Barkley said he would probably work “a year or more” if Johnson changes his mind. He also said he hopes that does not happen because he would not want anyone else.
That comment opens a wide door. If Johnson stays, Barkley has a built-in excuse. For now, the plan is clear on paper, but history tells fans to stay skeptical about every single farewell promise.
Why their exits look so different
The irony is hard to miss. Rodgers has repeatedly said he has little interest in a broadcasting career after retirement. That makes the comparison with Barkley a bit odd, since their futures look so different.
Barkley still has a weekly platform to shape his goodbye. Rodgers has a season of games to finish first. Both men will leave in a style that fans will remember for years to come.
So who really exits better? Barkley made his pitch on the radio, and Rodgers can answer with his play and his words. Fans will decide who gets the last word when the season finally ends.
Little-known fact: In a December 15, 2025 win over the Dolphins, Rodgers became the oldest quarterback in NFL history to complete at least 85% of his passes in a game.
