The crowds gathered in front of parliament and flooded the park in front of the Serbian Presidency building which was the stronghold of regime supporters for more than 18 months. Members of the crowd carried away all kinds of souvenirs from the park which was named Caciland. Tents and furniture were set ablaze.
Tens of thousands also gathered at the central Slavija Square where the final Student List campaign rally was held just days earlier.
The common greeting among the crowd was congratulations.
Strong police forces withdrew from central city streets where they had cordoned off the approaches to the headquarters of the Republic Election Commission (RIK). Members of the crowd pelted all kinds of objects at the police vehicles.
A crowd of equal size gathered in the central Freedom Square in the northern city of Novi Sad to celebrate the victory. That crowd also lit flares and threw firecrackers. The anti-government protests started in Novi Sad 2 years earlier following the collapse of a concrete canopy at the city’s central railway station which claimed 16 lives.
