And then there was one.
The Vikings and their historically good defense remain the only undefeated team in football after the Chiefs and 49ers met their matches.
Seattle proved they can win both without, and against, Kenneth Walker III.
J.J. McCarthy rose to the occasion and shone with crisp efficiency in the Giants’ overtime thriller over the Texans as 10.5-point underdogs. How apropos: all three Giants running backs found the end zone after Najee Harris’ release for criticizing the platoon approach in the backfield.
The Jets established a new bar for embarrassment.
We’ll get some more black-and-white contrast with the Week 8 matchups following a tumultuous slate.
NFL Week 8 confidence pool rankings
14 points: Patriots over Dolphins
The Dolphins got their feel-good win. Don’t expect a New England team that was a mistake or two short of winning a high-pace ball game against Caleb Williams to gift them another one.
13 points: Jaguars over Colts
There are too many problems under the hood with Indianapolis. Daniel Jones can’t find his targets, and the Colts lead the NFL in turnover margin (-9) while the defense struggles to generate pressure. Anyone is a good bet over this team right now.
12 points: Bengals over Titans
Tony Pollard ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns, and the Titans still lost. Cincinnati’s defense has much improved, and Joe Burrow and his arsenal are rolling after 35 unanswered points.

11 points: Raiders over Jets
The Raiders are coming back to Earth after losing to four straight legitimate opponents. Kirk Cousins will remain under center, but either way, the Jets’ poor game management deserves no stock.
10 points: Steelers over Browns
Aaron Rodgers moved into third place on the all-time passing touchdowns list while engineering a late rally to lift the Steelers to 5-2. With the division lead on the line, next will be revenge over an underwhelming Browns team that beat him in Week 4.
9 points: Rams over Chargers
Sean McVay has enough tricks up his sleeve to stump the Chargers, as the past six coaches they have faced have done.
8 points: Falcons over Buccaneers
It’s two of the most nebulous teams in the league. Then again, this is the NFC South, and what else is new? Both defenses are coming off spectacular performances, so give me the offense with higher upside.

7 points: Bills over Ravens
Safe to say that without Lamar Jackson, this offense is without a paddle. With him, it’s too soon to say after a three-week absence. There’s not enough reason to fade Josh Allen and the rested Bills.
6 points: Lions over Vikings
Minnesota’s defense is truly remarkable. In the same breath, when was the last time we were talking about benching a starting quarterback for a 6-0 team? Kyler Murray and a No. 29-ranked offense in yards per game will cede to the high-octane Lions.
5 points: Panthers over Packers
Bryce Young, the offensive line, and an abysmal run defense collapsed last week. Carolina has still shown what it can do, and a big bounce-back effort is plausible against an uninspiring Packers team.
4 points: Eagles over Commanders
The Eagles did everything to keep things competitive amid their disastrous roster circumstances, and the Cowboys had the offensive firepower to be the better of two flawed teams. The same can’t be said for Washington, and the Eagles’ resilience will see its due.

3 points: Seahawks over Bears
Sam Darnold cleaned it up to help hand the Chiefs their first loss. If there’s any defense that can slow Caleb Williams, it’s Seattle. Take the better pedigree at home.
2 points: Broncos over Chiefs
It’s hard to think these Chiefs would drop two in a row. I’d like to see Bo Nix and the offense produce like last week across a longer stretch, but after losing to Kansas City in Week 1, there’s been enough improvement to turn the tables now on home turf.
1 point: Cardinals over Cowboys
Considering how low the Cardinals were regarded in the preseason, they have played enough competitive football to expect a surprise here and there. Dallas’ turnstile defense is vulnerable to anyone.
LAST WEEK: 6-8, 55/105 points
OVERALL: 59-48, 505/874 points
