The beneficiaries with Telecel staff
Access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education should not be determined by ability. Guided by this belief, the Telecel Ghana Foundation extended its commitment to inclusive learning to the Volta School for the Deaf in Hohoe, Volta Region, where 100 students took part in hands-on robotics training as part of Telecel Ghana’s Care Month celebrations.
The workshop, facilitated by the Mingo Foundation, introduced students to practical STEM concepts through engaging activities designed to build creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The initiative underscored a simple principle: every child, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and fulfil their potential.
Speaking at the event, Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications Manager at Telecel Ghana, said the initiative was the Foundation’s way of creating meaningful impact during Care Month.
“At Telecel, Care Month is dedicated to our customers and employees across Ghana. For the Foundation, we wanted to provide care that truly counts, which is why we are here today. Seeing these students grasp basic engineering concepts so quickly and build their projects with minimal guidance proves that ability should never define potential. Every child deserves the opportunity to become tomorrow’s engineer, innovator or problem-solver,” she said.
The headmaster of the school, Mr. Joe Innocent Kodjo Tsameny, expressed appreciation to the Foundation for the training.
“Opportunities like this help bring out the potential in our students. As the world becomes increasingly digital, I am pleased that they are gaining practical, hands-on experience in robotics. This training has enabled them to apply the concepts they have learned in theory,” he said.
Telecel employee volunteers worked alongside the students throughout the day, offering guidance and encouragement as they completed their projects.
One of the standout participants was 13-year-old Makafui, the first among her peers to complete her project. Speaking through a sign language interpreter, she said the experience had inspired her to dream bigger.
“I was very happy to finish first. The facilitators helped us understand each step, and I really enjoyed building my project. This training has inspired me to pursue a career in STEM. Thank you, Telecel Foundation, for giving us this opportunity,” she said.
Through initiatives such as this, the Telecel Ghana Foundation continues to expand access to quality learning opportunities, equipping more young people with the confidence, skills and inspiration to help shape the future through STEM.
