By Zoila Palma: The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and UNICEF showcased improvements to Belize’s emergency shelter system during an informational session held on October 26, 2026.
The event, titled “Innovate. Improve. Invest. – A DRR Experience,” highlighted investments and innovations aimed at strengthening the country’s disaster preparedness and protecting vulnerable communities.
The initiative, led by the Government of Belize through NEMO under the Ministry of the Public Service, Disaster Risk Management and Enterprise, in partnership with UNICEF, focuses on improving disaster management policies, data systems and shelter services. The partnership follows a child-centered approach intended to better protect children, families and vulnerable groups before, during and after emergencies.
Among the key achievements are a Comprehensive Disaster Management Policy, a Shelter Inspection Dashboard to monitor shelter conditions and readiness, and improvements to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in designated school shelters. A Shelter Management Training Programme has also strengthened the capacity of public officers, with 213 officers completing the online, self-paced training to date.
The session brought together government officials, development partners, media representatives and community stakeholders to examine how technology, data and collaboration can improve national shelter readiness.
