Los Angeles’ new network of speed cameras opened on Monday morning, with the first wave of 20 cameras already catching out early-morning commuters. Two on La Cienega Blvd were seen lighting up the darkness on Monday morning.

The new automatic cameras will target speeding vehicles across major thoroughfares, with penalties reaching $500 for the most extreme violations.

“Another light. When I pass here every day going to the gym, it’s flashing every few minutes,” Brian Meung, who lives near La Cienega Boulevard and Pickford Street, told Fox News.

In the first phase, nearly 20 cameras were installed in the city. By the end of 2026, these cameras are likely to sit at 125 enforcement sites to monitor over-speeding vehicles across LA’s 15 council districts.

During the initial 60-day period starting Oct. 26, speeding drivers will only receive warnings by mail and the monetary fine will only kick in after the grace period ends on Dec. 26.

Four intersections have been confirmed for the initial launch: La Cienega Boulevard and Pico Boulevard, La Brea Avenue and 1st Street, Fairfax Avenue and Clinton Street and Melrose Avenue and Hayworth Avenue.

The cameras are also set to be installed along portions of Sunset Boulevard, Olympic Boulevard, Venice Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

Street Racing Kills founder Lily Trujillo, who lost her 15-year-old daughter in a 2013 street racing crash, said that the speed cameras will help fill a crucial information gap for law enforcement agencies.

“I found out the hard way how many people race. How many people speed. I never thought about it before. I didn’t know how many people died every year in our streets… But you know what I did realize? That my daughter was no longer with me,” Trujillo told KTLA.

The LA City Council authorized the five-year plan to install speed cameras under California Assembly Bill 645 earlier this year in March. According to the approved plan, the revenue generated through fines will go back into local safe-street infrastructure projects.
