Patrick Mahomes had one of the worst nights of his career.
Then Cris Collinsworth gave NFL fans something else to argue about.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback struggled through a miserable 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 25. Mahomes threw an interception, completed just 19 of 33 passes for 165 yards and watched the Chiefs fail to reach the red zone.
But it wasn’t just the scoreboard that got people talking.
Collinsworth’s praise of Mahomes after a fumble sparked a wave of criticism online. Some viewers accused the NBC broadcaster of giving the superstar quarterback preferential treatment.
And the reaction was brutal.
NFL Fans Were Not Buying the Mahomes Praise
During the broadcast, Mahomes scrambled after a loose football and got back up twice as Kansas City recovered possession.
Collinsworth praised the quarterback’s determination, asking which other quarterback would get up twice to pursue the ball.
To some viewers, it was a moment of admirable toughness.
To others, it was another example of Mahomes receiving a level of praise that other quarterbacks would never get for the same play.
The criticism spread online, with some fans arguing that Collinsworth would have reacted differently if a less celebrated quarterback had made the same mistake.
That is the problem with being one of the NFL’s biggest stars: every play becomes a referendum on your reputation.
Was Collinsworth Right, or Was This Too Much?
There is a reasonable argument on both sides.
Mahomes did show determination by continuing to pursue the loose ball. Quarterbacks are not obligated to make every play look graceful, and effort matters even during a disastrous performance.
But the criticism is not entirely difficult to understand.
Kansas City scored three points. Mahomes threw an interception. The offense managed only 213 total yards, its lowest regular-season total with Mahomes starting.
In that context, some fans wanted more analysis of what went wrong and less celebration of a scramble after a fumble.
The question is not whether Mahomes deserves respect. His accomplishments speak for themselves.
It is whether the broadcast applied the same standard to him that it would apply to another quarterback.
That debate is not going away anytime soon.
The Chiefs Have Bigger Problems Than a TV Broadcast
While the internet argues about Collinsworth, Kansas City has a football problem.
The Seahawks disrupted Mahomes and limited the Chiefs’ ability to generate explosive plays. The offensive line struggled under pressure, while the receiving group failed to provide enough consistent help.
Injuries to Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton have complicated the situation, and the Chiefs are still waiting for left tackle Josh Simmons to return.
None of that excuses every mistake Mahomes made in Seattle.
The quarterback acknowledged after the game that his decision-making and execution needed to improve. He also recognized that Kansas City must start faster against strong defenses.
The Chiefs cannot afford another performance like this if they want to remain among the AFC’s contenders.
The Mahomes Treatment Debate Is Back
Mahomes has spent years being praised for impossible throws, late-game heroics and championship performances.
That reputation is earned.
But superstar status also creates expectations for broadcasters. Fans want honest analysis, especially when a star is struggling.
Collinsworth’s comments struck a nerve because they touched on a familiar NFL argument: Do the league’s biggest names receive too much favorable attention?
One broadcast moment will not settle that debate.
Still, the timing was unfortunate for Mahomes and the Chiefs. Following a three-point performance, even praise for his effort became controversial.
Patrick Mahomes Needs a Response
Kansas City visits the Denver Broncos on Nov. 1, giving Mahomes an immediate opportunity to change the conversation.
A strong performance would quiet some of the criticism and remind everyone why the Chiefs have spent years dominating the AFC.
Another offensive struggle would only intensify the scrutiny.
As for Collinsworth, he is entitled to praise a quarterback’s effort. Fans are equally entitled to question whether the commentary matched the performance.
Did Cris Collinsworth simply recognize Mahomes’ toughness, or has the NFL’s biggest quarterback become practically untouchable on television? Chiefs fans will have their answer. So will everyone else.
