IOWA CITY — Iowa football players are looking forward to rebounding this week after a disappointing loss to Minnesota. A last-second field goal secured the 13-10 win for the Golden Gophers on Oct. 24.
While Iowa had its issues last weekend, the Hawkeyes are hoping to work out the problems and turn the page as they play in another trophy game against Wisconsin on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Here are some of the notable things that players shared with members of the media at their availability on Oct. 27.
Reflecting but not dwelling on Minnesota loss
We all know of the "24-hour" rule that Iowa football has: The Hawkeyes don't spend more than 24 hours thinking about a win or a loss. On Sunday, it's back to work for the task ahead.
"Since Sunday, we've completely moved on," tight end DJ Vonnahme said.
Vonnahme had six receptions for 31 yards in the loss to Minnesota. He thought the Hawkeyes' biggest issue was lack of execution.
"Just a bad day. Bad day for the offense," Vonnahme said. "But we're moving on and we're really looking forward to this week to see how we can respond."
Defensive lineman Will Hubert said he felt the defense did a good job at stopping Minnesota's run game. He said the team is focused on and learning from what happened and apply it going forward. Hubert said there isn't enough time to spend more than a Sunday dwelling on the previous game.
"If you lose, learn from it, flush it, and apply it to the next week," Hubert said. "And try not to make the same mistakes. It just really boils down to that."
What the players are seeing ahead of Wisconsin
The Hawkeyes are eager to show everybody their bounce-back game. They have been focused in practice on cleaning up some of the mistakes that hurt them in the game against Minnesota.
"It just comes down to focus," Vonnahme said. "Focus during the week, during practice, and we have got to really maximize our opportunities each and every day out on the field."
Tight end Addison Ostrenga said that the Hawkeyes "really respect" how Wisconsin plays.
"They're really hustling to the ball defensively, and I respect that, but I think we can match that energy this week," Ostrenga said. He mentioned that this week in practice he has been focusing on his fundamentals.
"When games like that (Minnesota) happen, it really makes you look inward," Ostrenga said. "What can I do to be better and not let that happen again? So for me, I'm just trying to work on that first step, my eyes, every little detail I can, and just trying to bring the guys along."
