KUALA LUMPUR: Six cases of illegal racing and speed testing were detected during an overnight enforcement operation in Kuala Lumpur, with nine motorcycles seized
Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (RTD) director Hamidi Adam said the operation, conducted jointly with the department's Putrajaya headquarters, targeted illegal racing and dangerous riding along Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Ampang and the city centre.
The operation involved 37 enforcement personnel and ran from "10pm yesterday to 5am today", he said in a statement.
Hamidi said 35 vehicles were inspected during the seven-hour operation, with enforcement action taken against 11.
A total of 47 notices were issued for various offences, including driving without a valid licence, expired driving licences and motor vehicle licences, lack of insurance coverage and technical violations.
Other offences included unauthorised vehicle modifications, non-compliant registration plates and exhaust systems.
"Nine motorcycles were also seized," he said.
Hamidi said Section 42A was a new provision under the Road Transport Act aimed at strengthening enforcement against illegal racing and speed testing.
Under Section 42A, first-time offenders face fines of between RM2,000 and RM10,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
Repeat offenders face heavier penalties, including fines ranging from RM5,000 to RM20,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
Hamidi said public roads were not racing circuits.
"The thrill sought by a handful of individuals should not come at the expense of the safety of other road users."
