KUALA LUMPUR: Family members and supporters of the late Noorizwan Zulkefly will march to parliament tomorrow to demand justice over his death in police custody and call for the immediate establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) director Rania Aljunied said the march, organised by the rights group, would involve Noorizwan's family and friends, civil society groups, lawyers and members of the public.
She said the group would hand over a memorandum to members of parliament demanding accountability from the relevant parties.
"The investigation has not been classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Furthermore, no police officer has been suspended or arrested following Noorizwan's death in custody on Oct 1. Justice has not been served," she said.
Rania said the march would begin at Taman Tugu at 10.30am before proceeding to parliament.
Noorizwan, 42, was detained on Sept 19 to assist investigations into drug possession, theft and housebreaking.
He was held at the Cheras district police headquarters before being taken to the Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM Hospital (HCTM) on Sept 30. He was pronounced dead the following day.
Yesterday, Rania and LFL lawyer Dina Zamri disputed Bukit Aman's statement that Noorizwan had external injuries but no internal bleeding, with the cause of death still pending laboratory analysis.
Rania said a post-mortem conducted by an HCTM pathologist found extensive bleeding in the brain and bleeding in the intestines.
The pathologist determined that the cause of death was trauma from blunt-force impact to the head.
Two days ago, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim directed Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into Noorizwan's death.
Khalid then instructed the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the case, noting that unusual injuries had been found on Noorizwan's body.
