US President Donald Trump has escalated his criticism of Norway, describing the country as a “shit house country” and declaring that Norwegian immigrants are not welcome in the United States because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump made the remarks at a political rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, ahead of next week’s US midterm elections.
Blaming immigration for recent unrest in France, the US president said he would welcome immigrants from some countries but would exclude Norwegians because of the Nobel Peace Prize decision.
“Because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize … So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” Trump said.
He also described Norway as a “shit house country”, using an expression he has previously directed at Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
However, there was no indication that the Trump administration was introducing any new official policy restricting immigration from Norway.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said the Nobel Committee operates independently of the Norwegian government.
“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded them of that, if anyone is wondering, and that is still the case,” Eide told Norway’s national broadcaster, NRK, on Monday.
His ministry declined to comment further on Trump’s remarks.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration over his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Earlier this month, he described the decision as an “indelible stain” on Norway.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, an independent body, rather than by the Norwegian government.
Trump’s latest comments have also drawn attention to the contrast between his description of Norway and the country’s economic standing.
Norway ranks among the world’s highest-income countries by gross domestic product per capita and operates a sovereign wealth fund that reported a record profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns, equivalent to $184.3 billion, in the first half of 2026.
The remarks come as Trump continues to make immigration a central issue in his political messaging ahead of the midterm elections.
