Orlando Pirates have little time to celebrate their return to the CAF Champions League group stages, with three consequential matches awaiting Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side in a demanding run that culminates in the Soweto Derby.
The Buccaneers begin with Milford FC in the Carling Knockout last 16 on Tuesday, knowing that victory is essential if they are to keep their defence of the trophy alive.
The fixture comes just days after Pirates booked their place in the Champions League group stages with a 4-0 victory over African Stars, completing a 5-0 aggregate triumph over the Namibian side.
That continental success was an important step for Ouaddou, whose team missed out on the group stages last season.
However, the focus must now shift quickly to domestic football, where there is more silverware to pursue.
Milford present the immediate challenge. The KwaZulu-Natal side will be eager to make their mark against one of South Africa’s biggest clubs, while Pirates know that a cup tie leaves little room for error.
The Buccaneers won the Carling Knockout last season and will be keen to keep their hopes of retaining the trophy alive. With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, Ouaddou must balance the need to manage his squad with the importance of avoiding an upset.
The Derby awaits
After Milford, Pirates turn their attention to a Betway Premiership meeting with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
The Soweto Derby carries its own demands, with bragging rights and valuable league points at stake. For Pirates, it is also an opportunity to carry the confidence gained from their continental campaign into one of the biggest fixtures on the domestic calendar.
But the danger is looking too far ahead. A derby can dominate the conversation throughout the week, yet Pirates must first negotiate a knockout fixture against Milford before they can fully focus on Chiefs.
The demanding schedule will test the squad’s depth, recovery and concentration, particularly after the physical and emotional demands of their Champions League qualifiers.
Ouaddou has spoken about the importance of having enough attacking options to rotate as Pirates compete on multiple fronts. This run will provide an early test of that depth, with the coach needing contributions from his wider squad.
The third consequential assignment in this stretch will be another opportunity for Pirates to maintain momentum as they balance their domestic ambitions with the demands of continental football.
For now, Milford are the priority. Progression in the Carling Knockout would keep one trophy within reach and allow Pirates to approach the Soweto Derby with their cup ambitions intact.
The Champions League group-stage place has been secured. The next challenge is turning that momentum into domestic results, starting on Tuesday before the spotlight shifts to Chiefs.
