San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan offered a frank critique after kicker Eddy Pineiro missed another extra point. He acknowledged that while this blunder did not affect the outcome of their recent victory, the ongoing issues with kicking must be resolved to preserve their undefeated status.
Shanahan’s straightforward comments reflect growing concerns about the special teams unit. Local analysts note that the front office’s reluctance to make changes goes beyond just on-field performance. Tim Kawakami shared a report on X that issued a clear warning to the organization about a significant issue, stating: “If the 49ers believe Pineiro is still their best option, that’s up to them. Kicker-roulette is a scary thing. I get it. But it can’t be about cap space. Cap space doesn’t make kicks. You win — or lose — them with the players you believe are right for the job.’’
Kawakami’s critique emphasizes that financial caution should not take precedence over the need for dependable execution in close games. As San Francisco continues to build on its strong start to the season, addressing the ongoing kicking issues will be crucial to ensuring that minor operational flaws do not derail their championship aspirations.
