An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 struck Afghanistan on the evening of October 25, with tremors also felt in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan, according to seismological authorities.
The Institute of Geology, Earthquake-Resistant Construction and Seismology of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan said the earthquake was recorded at 22:44 Dushanbe time, according to preliminary data from its Seismic Monitoring Center.
The epicenter was located in Afghanistan at 36.44° north latitude and 70.99° east longitude.
Tajik seismologists said they determined the epicenter using data from the institute’s seismic stations, the Roghun hydropower plant and the Geophysical Service of the National Academy of Sciences.
The institute’s statement did not specify the intensity of the tremors in Dushanbe or other parts of Tajikistan. No information was immediately available on possible casualties, damage or destruction.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.2 and was recorded at around 22:46 Dushanbe time. Its epicenter was in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, approximately 82 kilometers from Ishkashim in Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). The earthquake reportedly occurred at a depth of about 110 kilometers.
Uzbekistan’s seismological service reported that the tremors reached an intensity of up to two points in some areas of the country.
