DOBEDO builds PORTABLE PAVILION FROM DEMOLISHED JAPANESE BARN
Designed by DOBEDO STUDIO, EHHO!² is a portable micro-architecture engineered from materials salvaged during the deconstruction of an agricultural barn in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. The mobile timber structure draws functional and formal inspiration from the traditional Japanese kago (palanquin), carrying architectural remnants of rural infrastructure into the urban public realm. Upcycling weathered corrugated iron sheets, structural logs, reclaimed timber boards, and hand-woven ropes, the project translates rural material memory into a compact, deployable social pavilion carried by two people.
CORRUGATED METAL AND TREE-BRANCHES DETAIL LOW-TECH ASSEMBLY
The tectonic assembly by DOBEDO STUDIO balances low-tech mechanics with site-adaptive details. The rusted corrugated metal sheets are bent to form a protective curved roof, utilizing decades of atmospheric weathering as a natural, textured exterior skin. Hinged timber side panels fold downward to function as exterior benches, exposing a contrasting crimson-painted interior inspired by the seasonal bloom of local red spider lilies (higanbana). To secure the folding benches during transport, the studio integrated small wooden branches as tactile latch pins. If misplaced during transit, these fasteners can be replaced using fallen twigs sourced directly from nearby urban trees, establishing an intuitive, maintenance-free locking mechanism.
