At many comedy shows, music often competes with comedy for the audience’s attention, with live performances and DJ sets sometimes emerging as the evening’s biggest highlights.
However, at the ‘2 Kings One Mic’ show on Friday, October 23, the spotlight remained firmly on the headlining comedians, Patrick “Salvador” Idringi and Dr. Hillary Okello, who delivered an evening that demonstrated the power of comedy to entertain on its own.
Held at the Kampala Serena Hotel, the I&M Bank-powered show attracted a sold-out crowd for an evening built around humour, storytelling and the comic side of shared everyday experiences.
With a relatively simple line-up, the show gave each performer an opportunity to connect with the audience through their individual comedic styles, allowing the evening to build steadily towards the two headline acts.
The programme was hosted by Dr. Mitch Egwang, who guided the audience through the evening and kept the energy flowing between performances.
Janzi Band opened the entertainment with lively renditions of popular songs across different genres, setting the mood and giving guests a warm musical welcome before the comedy took centre stage.
Female stand-up comedian Cotilda Inapo was the first comedian to perform, warming up the audience with her signature humour and relatable observations about everyday life. Her set helped establish the evening’s playful atmosphere and prepared the crowd for the performances that followed.
Next on the microphone was Okello Okello, who also doubles as a film actor. He brought a different dimension to the line-up, drawing on his stage presence and distinctive comedic style to keep the audience engaged.
Dr. Hillary Okello then took to the stage, delivering his trademark storytelling and sharp observations on current affairs, social trends and everyday life. Known for finding humour in ordinary situations, he transformed familiar experiences into punchlines, building a strong connection with the audience through his relatable narratives and distinctive delivery.
As one of the evening’s headline acts, Dr. Hillary demonstrated how everyday situations and shared social experiences can become compelling comedy when delivered with timing, wit and insight.
Salvador followed as the final act, bringing polished delivery, energetic stage presence and well-timed humour to the stage. His jokes moved comfortably between observations about everyday life and witty social commentary, reinforcing the qualities that have earned him a loyal following across the continent.
One of the evening’s most touching moments came when Salvador paused his performance to call for special recognition of his mother, who was among the audience members. The gesture added a personal and heartfelt dimension to a night largely defined by laughter.
Despite their years of experience and familiarity with live audiences, both headliners managed to keep their performances engaging. Their sets drew enthusiastic reactions, with standing ovations reflecting the audience’s appreciation of the quality of the comedy on display.
The event was supported by I&M Bank Uganda Limited as the official banking partner, alongside Uganda Waragi, SafeBoda, The Living Group, Aquafina, Pepsi, Euro Gold Refinery and Virah Forex Bureau.
For I&M Bank, the evening provided an opportunity to connect with customers through an experience beyond traditional banking services.
“Comedy has a way of bringing people from all walks of life into one room, sharing the same moment. We are glad to have supported ‘2 Kings One Mic’ and to see our customers enjoy an evening filled with laughter. This is what being On Your Side means to us: being part of the moments that matter to our customers,” said Annette Nakiyaga, I&M Bank’s Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications.
The show attracted a diverse audience, including politicians, members of the business community, socialites and comedy enthusiasts, all brought together by a shared appreciation for humour.
Ultimately, ‘2 Kings One Mic’ delivered on its promise, putting the spotlight on two of Uganda’s established comedy talents and demonstrating how relatable storytelling, sharp observations and strong stage presence can carry an entire evening. With music providing the opening act and comedy remaining at the heart of the programme, the show offered a refreshing celebration of Uganda’s vibrant entertainment scene.
