The WNBA has delivered another record-breaking season, showing that its growing popularity extends beyond Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. The league’s 30th season attracted more than 90 million unique viewers across national networks during the 2026 regular season, setting a new benchmark for women’s professional basketball.
Clark remained one of the league’s biggest attractions, but other teams and players also helped drive audience growth. From Angel Reese’s matchups with the Fever to strong performances by established stars, the season demonstrated that fans are finding more reasons to watch WNBA basketball.
The WNBA reaches new heights with record viewership
The WNBA announced that more than 90 million unique viewers watched its nationally televised games during the 2026 regular season. The league also recorded more than 320 million hours of viewing, its highest regular-season total, highlighting the growing interest in women’s basketball.
Another major milestone came from individual broadcasts. A record 51 national telecasts averaged at least 1 million viewers, compared with 19 in 2025. Nine broadcasts averaged more than 2 million viewers, more than doubling the four games that reached that mark the previous season.
These figures suggest that the WNBA’s audience is growing and becoming more engaged. While individual stars continue to attract attention, the number of games reaching significant audiences indicates that interest is spreading across the league’s broader schedule.
Caitlin Clark remains a major attraction
Clark remained a central figure in the WNBA’s ratings success. The Indiana Fever guard played 40 of the team’s 44 regular-season games in 2026, giving broadcasters more opportunities to showcase one of the league’s most recognizable players.
Her greater availability contrasted with 2025, when injuries limited her to 13 appearances. Several Indiana matchups ranked among the season’s most-watched broadcasts, demonstrating Clark’s continued popularity and strong appeal to television audiences.
However, the bigger story is that the league’s growth does not depend on a single player. Clark remains an important attraction, but the WNBA’s broader roster of stars, competitive matchups, and growing audiences are helping build a more sustainable foundation for future seasons.
Viewership grows even when Indiana is not playing
One of the clearest signs of broader interest came from ESPN’s non-Indiana broadcasts. Those games averaged 984,000 viewers in 2026, representing a 24% increase compared with the previous season.
That growth matters because it offers a different way to measure the league’s popularity. Rather than looking only at broadcasts featuring Clark, the data show that audiences are increasingly watching games involving other teams and players.
ESPN’s overall WNBA coverage also reached a record audience. Across ESPN and ABC, the network group averaged 1.37 million viewers per game, up 17% year over year. These results suggest that the league is building interest across a wider range of matchups.
Angel Reese and Atlanta helped create must-watch games
Angel Reese’s move to the Atlanta Dream added another major storyline to the 2026 season. Her matchups against Clark and the Fever attracted significant attention, combining two recognizable young stars with a growing rivalry between their teams.
The Fever’s Aug. 16 game against Atlanta averaged approximately 2.6 million viewers on ESPN. It became the most-watched WNBA regular-season or postseason game ever on cable, according to ESPN’s season report.
That result showed how star power can extend beyond one team. Clark remained a major draw, but Reese and Atlanta helped create a matchup that attracted a large audience and gave fans another compelling reason to follow the league.
Established stars continue to strengthen the league
The WNBA’s wider appeal also depends on established players who have built loyal audiences over several seasons. Stars such as A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, and Sabrina Ionescu continue to provide compelling basketball and high-level competition.
Their contributions help the league maintain interest across different teams and markets. Championship races, playoff rivalries, and individual milestones create storylines that remain engaging even when Clark and the Fever are not involved.
This depth is important for the WNBA’s future. A league with several recognizable stars can offer broadcasters more attractive matchups, give fans more players to follow, and reduce the risk that audience interest depends too heavily on a single athlete.
More fans are attending WNBA games
The league’s growth was not limited to television. The WNBA drew approximately 3.8 million fans across 330 regular-season games in 2026, setting a new attendance record as the league expanded to 15 teams.
Average attendance reached 11,474 fans per game, while the league recorded 212 sellouts. Those figures reflected growing demand for live basketball and stronger interest in teams across the league.
Expansion also contributed to the increase, with the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire joining the competition. Independent attendance reports also found overall growth among the 13 teams that competed in 2025, although results varied across individual markets.
The WNBA’s media partnerships are creating more opportunities
The league’s broadcast partnerships have helped make games available across a wider range of platforms. In 2026, WNBA coverage appeared on ABC, ESPN, CBS, NBC, ION, USA Network, and Prime Video, giving fans more ways to follow the season.
Several broadcasters reported record results. CBS averaged 1.27 million viewers per regular-season game, up 9% from 2025, while ABC averaged 1.56 million, up 9%. ESPN’s regular-season broadcasts averaged 1.24 million viewers, a 32% jump.
More distribution can help the WNBA reach audiences who may not regularly follow women’s basketball. However, continued growth will depend on more than broadcast availability. Competitive games, recognizable players, effective promotion, and consistent scheduling will all play important roles in keeping viewers engaged.
The challenge is turning record ratings into lasting growth
The WNBA’s 2026 numbers provide strong evidence that interest in the league is expanding. Record viewership, rising attendance, and increased engagement offer a positive outlook as women’s basketball continues to attract new fans.
Still, one successful season does not guarantee that the same audience levels will continue indefinitely. The league must keep developing young talent, supporting established stars, and creating compelling competition that gives fans reasons to return throughout the season.
Clark’s influence remains important, but the broader ratings picture is encouraging. With Reese, Wilson, Stewart, Collier, and many other players contributing to the league’s appeal, the WNBA has multiple stars who can attract attention. Its next challenge is to turn that growing interest into a lasting habit for sports fans.
Fun fact: The WNBA’s 2026 regular season featured 109 games in which a team scored at least 100 points. That was a league record, reflecting an increasingly high-scoring style of play across the competition.
