Colombo, Oct 26 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Railways has launched a programme to overhaul three S11-type trains at an estimated cost of Rs. 25 million per train, with the support of the Government Factory Department.
The initiative, introduced this year, is aimed at improving railway services while reducing the workload at the Ratmalana Main Railway Workshop by sharing repair work with another government institution.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena inspected the ongoing overhaul of an Indian-manufactured S11 train at the Maligawatta Railway Yard on October 23.
Under the refurbishment programme, the train’s existing fibre front panel will be replaced with a newly designed stainless steel panel.
The repairs are expected to be completed shortly, and the train is scheduled to resume operations in January 2027.
The Heavy Welding Division of the Government Factory Department is assisting with the repairs, allowing the Ratmalana Main Railway Workshop to carry out its routine maintenance work more efficiently.
