For decades, historians of the ancient Near East have faced an awkward problem: they know the order in which many kings ruled, cities flourished and wars were fought, but not always exactly when those events happened.
The uncertainty can amount to decades or even more than a century. Now, researchers say clues preserved in ancient tree rings and polar ice may help pin one of the most important Bronze Age timelines more firmly to the calendar.
A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concludes that the so-called middle–low chronology provides the best fit for Mesopotamia between about 2000 and 1500 BCE. The findings matter because Mesopotamian dates serve as a chronological bridge connecting events across Anatolia, Egypt, the Levant, the Aegean and the wider eastern Mediterranean.
“Establishing the correct chronology has consequences far beyond Mesopotamia,” said Charlotte Pearson, associate professor at the University of Arizona’s Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research and a dendroarchaeologist who led the study. Pearson specialises in using tree rings and radiocarbon measurements to improve archaeological timelines.
Researchers have long known a great deal about Mesopotamian history from king lists, administrative records, inscriptions and astronomical observations. What remains uncertain is how to attach some of those relative sequences to exact calendar years. Several competing systems – the high, middle and low chronologies – can place the same events decades apart.
Pearson and her colleagues turned to wooden beams from ancient Anatolian sites, including Kültepe and Acemhöyük, which were connected to Mesopotamia through Old Assyrian trade. Tree-ring patterns had already linked timbers from several sites into a long sequence, but the sequence lacked a completely secure calendar anchor.
The team measured radiocarbon in individual annual tree rings and compared the resulting pattern with a reference curve built from 735 measurements on trees whose calendar dates were already known. Because atmospheric radiocarbon levels fluctuate slightly from year to year, these variations can function almost like a barcode, allowing researchers to match an unknown sequence to a specific period.
The approach anchored the combined Anatolian tree-ring record from 2072 to 744 BCE. At Gordion, for example, a distinctive radiocarbon shift around 1532-1531 BCE allowed the researchers to fix the sequence with annual precision. Tests on timbers from Porsuk and Acemhöyük independently supported the links between the different sites.
This, in turn, helped date major construction episodes. Timber from the Waršama Palace at Kültepe was cut around 1837-1836 BCE, while wood associated with the Sarıkaya Palace at Acemhöyük dated to 1778 BCE. When these dates were compared with Assyrian written records found at the sites, the middle chronology fitted the evidence far better than the younger “low” alternative.
However, the researchers still faced an eight-year difference between two versions of the middle chronology. To narrow it further, they turned to another source of evidence: traces of ancient volcanic eruptions preserved in polar ice.
Babylonian observations of Venus appear to record unusual atmospheric haze. The researchers found that only under the middle–low chronology do those observations coincide with the massive Aniakchak II eruption in Alaska in 1627-1628 BCE, one of the largest eruptions of the past 4,000 years.
Egypt provided another cross-check. Historical links connect Pharaoh Neferhotep I with rulers mentioned in Mesopotamian records. Under the middle–low system, Hammurabi’s 32nd year falls around 1754 BCE, close to independent estimates for Neferhotep I’s reign.
The study does not eliminate every uncertainty. The tree-ring evidence alone cannot clearly distinguish between the two middle chronologies, and the authors caution that dates outside the period they tested still require further scrutiny.
Nevertheless, the findings have broader implications. The framework places the fall of Babylon around 1587 BCE and also anchors evidence of severe drought in Anatolia to 1228–1188 BCE, including a multiyear drought in 1194-1192 BCE shortly before the destruction of the Hittite capital, Hattusa.
For archaeologists, a difference of just a few years can change how events across different civilisations are connected. By turning tree rings and ancient ice into chronological markers, the study offers historians of the Bronze Age a firmer basis for establishing who did what, and when.
