The US Treasury is tracking Iran’s crypto holdings and freezing them, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Washington’s sanctions machine has spent decades following tankers and wire transfers. Now it is following wallet addresses too.
This matters now because the target is large. Authorities are reportedly preparing to seize around $1 billion in Iranian digital assets tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The idea that crypto offers a clean escape from US sanctions is looking shakier by the week.
How the freeze campaign works
The effort sits under a broader sanctions push called “Operation Economic Outcast.” It was announced on August 24, 2026. That campaign extended Iran sanctions into digital assets, alongside more familiar targets like shipping and aviation.
Bessent’s key claim is that the government knows where these assets are. He said authorities are isolating funds they had already identified. The estimated total, drawn from various seizure efforts, ranges from hundreds of millions of dollars to around $1 billion.
Timing has been a moving target. On October 9, 2026, Bessent said the US would “probably” seize $1 billion in Iran-linked crypto that week. “Probably” is doing real work in that sentence, and it is worth keeping in view until a completed seizure is confirmed.
The Treasury is not acting alone. It has designated several Iranian exchanges and is coordinating with stablecoin issuers to freeze accounts connected to those entities. Stablecoins are tokens designed to hold a steady value, and their issuers can block specific addresses from moving funds. That makes them a natural pressure point for sanctions enforcement.
Tether’s role and the exchange designations
Tether, issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has been one of the most active participants. The company has frozen approximately $550 million in USDT linked to Iranian addresses, mostly over the course of 2026.
The freezes came in large chunks. Tether reported locking approximately $344 million in USDT in April 2026 over links to Iran. In July 2026, it froze more than $130 million in USDT connected to Iran’s Central Bank.
Tether has said it continues to work with US authorities to strengthen enforcement.
On the exchange side, the Treasury has sanctioned multiple Iran-linked digital asset platforms since June 2026. One of the most notable came on September 17, 2026. That day, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated BitBank, an exchange controlled by Babak Zanjani, for helping facilitate Bitcoin payments to the Iranian regime.
An OFAC designation effectively cuts the named entity off from the US financial system. It also creates legal risk for anyone who keeps doing business with it.
Why Iran turned to crypto in the first place
Iran has operated under heavy sanctions for years, which limits its access to the global banking system. The research behind the Treasury’s push points to Iran increasingly using digital assets to settle transactions and reach funds despite those restrictions.
The catch is that blockchains are also public ledgers. Every transaction leaves a permanent, traceable record. Many of the most useful assets for moving value, especially dollar-pegged stablecoins, are issued by companies that can freeze tokens at the request of authorities.
That is the irony at the center of this story. Iran reportedly reached for digital dollars to dodge the US financial system. Those digital dollars turned out to come with a freeze button that the US system can ask someone to press.
What this means for crypto markets and compliance
For the crypto industry, the biggest signal is about how far US enforcement now reaches. The Treasury is treating digital assets as a full sanctions front rather than a side issue.
Stablecoin issuers sit in an especially exposed position. Tether’s cooperation shows that centralized issuers can function as an enforcement layer. It also reminds users that holding a stablecoin means trusting a company that can block funds when compelled to.
There are open questions worth tracking. The first is whether the roughly $1 billion seizure that Bessent described as “probable” actually closes, and how much of it is recovered. The second is whether additional exchanges join BitBank on OFAC’s list as Operation Economic Outcast develops.
For now, the Treasury is sending a clear message. Moving funds onto a blockchain does not move them beyond Washington’s reach. If Bessent’s account holds, the government already knows where much of that money sits, and it is working to keep it there.
