The fears and concerns over recent reports that the Penguins have a budget different than the salary cap are founded, so we delved into the topic with specifics and context Monday. Even some of my critics gave a little stick tap on the piece. We also have the weekly Penguins prospects report below. Elsewhere in the Daily, what can the Washington Capitals get on the trade market for young Ivan Miroshnichenko? In the wake of the Connor Hellebuyck trade, Canada is discussing the fishbowl players live in, the latest 2027 NHL Draft rankings are out, and Dustin Byfuglien finally got to say goodbye.
Whatever shall we do without daily Hellebuyck updates and Dylan Larkin trade talk, long ago stalled like a rusty bucket car of some kids trying to escape in every 1980s horror movie? See also: Sam Raimi’s Delta 88.
There’s not a lot in the Daily, so let’s get to it.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Tristan Broz. Our contributor Sam Wismer had a good talk with Broz about where his game is and what he’s working on. It’s not your usual drive-by prospects article with clichés. Broz really opened up about his fight to graduate from being a Penguins prospect.
And we got into the Penguins’ money. What exactly does it mean to have a cash budget that’s different than the salary cap? Are the Penguins going to be held back by finances? Well, we tackled that topic, and if you didn’t read it, it’s a thorough review of the Penguins’ salary cap talk.
Steelers Now: I thought this was the way, but apparently the idea is taking Steelers Nation by storm. No, the Steelers are not a pass-happy, fling-the-rock offense. Alan Saunders delivers the great news: no, the Steelers are a running team.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
NHL on TNT (video): Detroit has set an unworkable price, and the right teams don’t have the assets. Is there any chance Dylan Larkin will further expand his trade list? What about Montreal chanting his name? Well, no, Larkin isn’t interested in Montreal.
If I were a columnist in Detroit, my keyboard would be worn out hammering the organization. And poking at Larkin, too.
Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers are tinkering with their roster and getting healthy. It’s an interesting sideshow for the Flyers roster.
NHLtraderumors.me: Ivan Miroshnichenko is being compared to current Penguins winger Egor Chinakhov. What can the Washington Capitals get for him on the trade block? Will it be the same price tag?
NHL.com: Central Scouting has put out its preliminary list of players to watch for the 2027 NHL Draft. And to no surprise, Landon DuPont is at the top, but perhaps we should be familiarizing ourselves with the rest of the crew.
Sportsnet: Toronto Maple Leafs GM John Chayka has been talking to the media, now that they’re not accusing him of being a liar and a conman. He dished on Gavin McKenna, Easton Cowan, and that beleaguered defense.
Detroit Hockey Now: A rookie goalie in his first NHL start stoned Connor McDavid and stole the game. The Detroit Red Wings had a good night.
Sportsnet: Dustin Byfuglien was a freight train and one of the few players who played the wing or slotted as a defenseman and did both well. He had a ring from his time in Chicago and was a stalwart for Winnipeg. His career ended abruptly, and that was it. Sunday, he played in the Winnipeg Jets alumni game at the Heritage Classic, and yesterday he wrote an absolutely perfect message to fans that’s worth reading.
