SHILLONG, OCT 26: Congress chief Vincent H Pala on Monday said the VPP’s much-talked about wave of 2024 has faded and its support has “come down drastically” across Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
Pala, who is preparing for the Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll after losing the seat in 2024 following 15 years as MP, said the contest will be triangular.
Responding to a query on whether VPP still holds its 2024 momentum, Pala said, “Personally, I feel the wave in 2024 is different from what it is now. That time the social media wave was there.”
He said he has toured several VPP strongholds and found erosion of support.
“VPP got maximum support from Mylliem, but I have been to Mylliem this time and I saw the support has come down drastically. They had massive support from Sohra and border areas like Pynursla, today it has come down drastically. In Jaintia Hills, VPP has come down drastically,” he said.
“We don’t see the VPP’s wave going up, but it is going down day by day,” Pala claimed.
The Congress chief said voters will take a final call only after notification and filing of nominations.
“This election is going to be a triangular fight between Congress, NPP and VPP, but people will not decide until and unless an election is announced and every candidate files their names,” he said.
Targeting VPP’s rule in the district councils, Pala said, “Many gates are coming without transparency and without accountability and many Syiems are being dropped without any proper reasons. They even went to court and won the case.”
He added, “This shows that they cannot even administer in district council, how will you expect them to administer in Delhi as well as in the State.”
“The people of Meghalaya are not fools, you can fool them once or twice but not thrice,” Pala said.
