Dez Bryant is demanding a thorough investigation after a confrontation in Southlake, Texas, left the former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver handcuffed on the ground with a police officer pointing a firearm in his direction. Bryant was cited for misdemeanor assault following the Oct. 25 incident, but he maintains that he was threatened before the encounter escalated and questions how officers handled the investigation.
“There’s only one real victim here… and that’s me,” Dez wrote in a social media post as he pushed back against the circumstances that led to the citation. The incident has drawn attention not only because of Bryant’s status as one of the most recognizable players in Cowboys history, but also because his two daughters witnessed the police response. Bryant says his biggest concern was seeing his children watch their father lying on the ground with a gun pointed at him.

The former NFL star acknowledges knocking a cellphone out of another man's hand during the confrontation. However, he argues that the incident should be investigated in full, including the events that preceded the physical contact and the alleged threat against him.
A traffic dispute escalates in a Southlake parking lot
According to Bryant’s account to OutKick, the confrontation began Sunday afternoon after he encountered two drivers he believed were driving recklessly and had cut him off near Kimball Avenue. The parties eventually ended up in the same parking lot near Chiloso Mexican Bistro in Southlake.
Bryant said he approached the drivers to confront them about their behavior on the road. The exchange became heated, and he alleged that one of the men implied he might shoot him.
Dez recalled warning the man that if he pulled a gun, he had better use it. He subsequently acknowledged knocking the man's cellphone out of his hand after the driver began recording the argument. The other man called police, and Bryant said he encouraged him to do so because he expected officers to investigate the alleged threat.
Instead, Bryant said, the responding officers ordered those involved to the ground at gunpoint. Video shared with OutKick shows Bryant and two other men lying facedown in the parking lot in handcuffs, with an officer holding a firearm in Bryant’s direction.
Why police drew their weapons
The Southlake Police Department said officers responded at approximately 12:59 p.m. Sunday to reports of a fight involving multiple people and a possible weapon. According to department spokesperson Capt. Blas Hernandez, officers drew their firearms as a precaution to address potential threats and protect everyone at the scene.
Several people were temporarily detained, but officers recovered no firearms. Police said the confrontation began with a traffic dispute before escalating into an argument and an alleged assault. Bryant was issued a citation for assault by contact, a Class C misdemeanor, and released at the scene. He was not arrested.
Bryant, however, believes the investigation did not adequately consider his allegations. He accused officers of relying too heavily on the other party’s cellphone footage without fully examining what happened before the recording began. He also said he wanted investigators to review any available surveillance footage of the initial traffic incident.
“I felt like it was very one-sided,” Bryant told OutKick, expressing frustration that he was the only person cited. Dez has maintained that he acted in self-defense and wants authorities to conduct a more comprehensive review of the encounter. His citation directs him to appear at Southlake Municipal Court on or before Nov. 20.
Beyond the citation itself, Bryant has emphasized the emotional impact of the police encounter, particularly because his daughters witnessed their father being detained. His girlfriend arrived at the scene with the children and recorded part of the incident. Dez said the sight of an officer pointing a gun in his direction while he was on the ground was especially troubling.
