Twenty-four people have died after a bus carrying church members collided head-on with a truck on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway at Kanga, near Mtito-Andei within Tsavo National Park in Makueni County.
The bus was ferrying 45 worshippers from The Christian Renewal Centre in Likoni, Mombasa, who were travelling back home after attending the burial of their colleague, the late Reverend Kiganane, in Makusi, Kakamega County.
According to Makueni Chief Officer for Health Dr Mulei Mbithi, 17 people died at the scene while five others later succumbed to their injuries whilst undergoing treatment at Mtito-Andei Sub-County Hospital. Sixteen patients remain hospitalised.
Pastor Cosmas Nyangweso, one of the survivors, spoke to journalists from his hospital bed with broken upper limbs. He said the group had departed a stopover in Mtito-Andei at around 7am before the disaster unfolded.
"We were from a burial ceremony in Lugari, western. The journey was okay through long with the driver seemingly sleepy. At around 7 am is when we left Mtito-Andei stopover but at Kanga area our driver tried to overtake a number of vehicles. While overtaking, the bus swayed off the road into the right and collided head-on with the truck which was also avoiding the collision," he said.
Nyangweso added that the impact flung passengers clear of both vehicles, with bodies and injured survivors scattered along the roadside.
"We were thrown outside the bus. Where I was lying there were bodies and other people crying for help but assistance came way long after hours," he said. He had earlier noted that the driver appeared fatigued during the long journey.
Makueni County Commissioner Abdulahi Khalif confirmed that the bus body was split almost in half owing to the speed at which both vehicles were travelling.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja dismissed a document purporting to show that the county approved the development of the building that collapsed in Eastleigh, insisting that the structure was constructed without the required building approvals.
In a statement posted on Sunday, October 25, Sakaja said the document circulating online was fake, arguing that it contained inconsistencies regarding the dates of the development application and its purported approval.
“I have seen some people peddling a fake approval document alleging that the Eastleigh development was approved. It is telling that this is the same document that the Eastleigh developer used to get NCA approval,” Sakaja stated.
The governor said the application for the building’s development was submitted in November 2024, making it impossible for it to have been approved in February of the same year.
“The application for development as shown below was made in November of 2024, it could not have been approved in February of the same year. Also, there is a difference between a change of user approval and a development approval,” he added.

President William Ruto dismissed claims that the government plans to stop the livestreaming of election results, accusing opposition leaders of spreading propaganda ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a church service at AIC Kasina in Mwingi, Kitui County, on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Ruto said the administration had no intention of restricting public access to election outcomes.
“Opposition leaders have started creating another propaganda that livestreaming of election results has been banned.
“Nonsense, propaganda, fake news. Why would anyone want to stop livestreaming of results? The sooner Kenyans get to know the results of an election, the better for our nation," Ruto said.
The remarks come amid debate over proposed changes to the Elections Act, which governs how election results are determined, transmitted and declared.
The president also urged political leaders to address issues affecting young Kenyans instead of using misinformation to mobilise them.
“I am asking those leaders who are really bankrupt of ideas and whose only business with young people is to misuse them, please, let us have better engagement with young people of Kenya,” Ruto said.
