Lorenzo Musetti has returned to the winners’ circle for the first time in four years after claiming the title in Lyon.
Musetti had the best season of his career in 2025, and as a result reached a career-high ranking of world number five in January.
The Italian looked set for another successful season after reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals, where he led Novak Djokovic by two sets to love before injuring his right leg.
Since then, Musetti has continued to be hindered by injuries, which forced him to miss both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, but he now appears to have returned to form and fitness after winning his first title in four years.
Lorenzo Musetti aiming to return to the top 10 after Lyon title
Musetti beat Taylor Fritz in the final to win the ATP 250 title in Lyon, completing an impressive week after dramatic wins against Flavio Cobolli and Luca Van Assche.
Despite all of the success Musetti achieved in 2025, it is his first title win in four years after losing in seven consecutive finals following his first two title wins in 2022. Musetti remains as the world number 26 following his title win, and he has now stated his goal to return to the top 10.
“I want to enjoy the end of the season by trying to play as many matches as possible, to rediscover what I’ve been missing this season; consistency in matches, my level, and feeling good physically,” said Musetti, as reported by La Gazetta dello Sport.
“I want to have this attitude in the coming weeks too, because it’s what helps me win matches, beat important players, and get out of tough situations. This is definitely the biggest difference between top players and those in a lower ranking, that fine line that can change a match.
“As for the team, this is it and this will be it. It’s my decision, and I’ll continue like this. I can’t wait to finish this season and then try to regain my ranking a bit. I don’t want to give numbers, but trying to get back into the top 10 is definitely a dream I think I have to chase.”
What is next for Lorenzo Musetti?
Musetti still has a number of ranking points to defend before the end of the 2026 season, totalling up to 375 after he qualified for the ATP Finals last year.
The 24-year-old will play his penultimate tournament of the 2026 season at the Vienna Open, where Musetti reached the semi-finals last year.
It will not be easy for Musetti, as he takes on sixth seed Frances Tiafoe in his first round match in the Austrian capital. This will be an eighth meeting between the two players, with Tiafoe leading their head-to-head 4-3.
Some of the other potential threats to Musetti in his half of the draw include Alexander Zverev, Cobolli and Alex de Minaur, with Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev potentially awaiting him in the final.
- First Round: Frances Tiafoe (6)
- Second Round: Arthur Fery/Jacob Fearnley
- Quarter-final: Alexander Zverev (1)/Brandon Nakashima
- Semi-final: Flavio Cobolli (4)/Alex de Minaur (5)
- Final: Carlos Alcaraz (2)/Daniil Medvedev (3)
As well as the Vienna Open, Musetti is also entered into the Paris Masters to conclude his 2026 season.
While Musetti may struggle to close in on the top 10 this year, he will have more opportunities to climb the rankings in 2027 after missing a number of tournaments in 2026.
