They narrowly missed out on eternal glory.
This Monday, October 26, one of the most closely contested Ballon d’Or awards in history will be handed out in London.
To mark the occasion, OneFootball has put together an XI of the greatest players never to have won the Ballon d’Or.
Choosing the midfield was particularly difficult. Andrea Pirlo notably got the nod over Wesley Sneijder, who many observers believe deserved to win the 2010 Ballon d’Or.
Picking the attack was tricky too, especially at centre-forward. In the end, Robert Lewandowski made the cut. The Polish striker was arguably robbed of the 2020 Ballon d’Or, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
So, what do you think of this XI? Let us know in the comments!
