Social media posts claiming that Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, distributed bread bearing his photograph to solicit votes are misleading, a Daily Trust digital forensic investigation has found.
A reverse image search using Google traced an earlier version of the image to bread bearing President Bola Tinubu’s photograph. Further digital forensic examinations found significant differences between the two versions, suggesting that the image showing Obi had been digitally manipulated.
The claim circulated amid growing political activities and public discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Daily Trust examined the images using Google’s SynthID technology, Hive’s AI detector, FOTO Forensic and other open-source tools. The tests indicated that the version bearing Obi’s photograph had undergone digital manipulation, although the findings alone do not establish who altered it or how.

How the images were examined
Daily Trust compared the two versions of the bread image and subjected them to digital forensic tests to determine whether the version showing Obi was authentic.
The first examination used SynthID, Google’s technology for identifying digital watermarks in content generated or edited with supported AI tools. According to the investigation, the results indicated possible AI-assisted editing associated with OpenAI tools.
A second test using Hive’s AI detector returned an AI-generation score of zero per cent for the version bearing Tinubu’s photograph and 81 per cent for the version showing Obi, according to the results recorded by Daily Trust.
The difference suggested that the images had distinct digital characteristics and that the Obi’s version was edited.
Daily Trust also used FOTO Forensic to examine the images’ noise patterns. The analysis reportedly found a higher level of noise in the version bearing Obi’s photograph than in the Tinubu version.
What the timeline revealed
The images’ online timeline also raised questions about the claim.
Daily Trust’s investigation traced a version of the bread image bearing Tinubu’s photograph to the first weeks of October 2026. An earlier instance of the version showing Obi was identified on October 20, 2026.
The Tinubu version therefore predates the identified Obi version. Combined with the forensic findings, this chronology supports the conclusion that the image showing Obi was a later alteration of an existing image.
What remains unverified
Daily Trust could not independently establish when and where the bread was distributed or determine whether Tinubu or the All Progressives Congress (APC) was responsible for distributing it.
The investigation focused on the authenticity of the circulating images, not on independently verifying the alleged distribution. Consequently, the forensic findings do not establish who distributed the bread or whether the activity took place as described in the social media posts.
Verdict: Misleading
The claim that Peter Obi distributed bread bearing his photograph to solicit votes is misleading because the image presented as evidence appears to have been digitally altered.
