(ANSA) - ROME, 27 OTT - Pope Leo XIV is to meet some victims of clerical sexual abuse on his upcoming South America trip, the Vatican said Tuesday.
During the Holy Father's upcoming Apostolic Journey to Latin America, meetings are planned with individuals who have been victims of abuse by members of the clergy and the Church," said the Vatican Press Office.
"These meetings reflect the Pope's desire to express his closeness to those who have suffered—and continue to suffer—as a result of this violence, to build with them paths toward healing that are accessible to anyone in need, and to ensure that the Church remains a safe and spiritually healthy environment that lives out and communicates the Gospel." Leo's apostolic journey to South America next month will be his sixth international trip, and his first since having successful lung-cancer surgery.
He will be in Uruguay November 6-8, visiting Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida, then travel to Argentina, where he will go to Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján November 8-11, and subsequently stay in Peru until November 17.
The American pontiff spent large chunks of his life in Peru after first going there as a missionary in the 1980s and served as the bishop of Chiclayo between 2015 and 2023.
He also acquired Peruvian citizenship.
Chiclayo and the capital Lima are among the Peruvian cities he will travel to. (ANSA).
