Dave Doeren was dismissed at NC State on Saturday following the Wolfpack's 31-28 loss on the road to Stanford on Friday night.
The ex-Wolfpack coach held his "press conference" with reporters Tuesday in Raleigh, speaking for more than 17 minutes without taking a single question.
Among his most notable remarks, Doeren did not mince words about the current state of college athletics, expressing hope that his successor at NC State will have the resources and institutional support, including NIL funding and revenue-sharing opportunities, needed to compete in the transfer portal and meet the program's expectations.
FIRED: Dave Doeren fired at NC State after 14 seasons leading Wolfpack football
"The resources need to match the expectations," Doeren said. "I hope for NC State this commitment to football really happens. I pray for the next head coach that he has the opportunity. It's not the way it used to be."
The "not the way it used to be" comment from Doeren referred to the traditional model of recruiting a high school class and developing it over four years. Instead, he said today's college football landscape often sees more players that programs want to keep enter the transfer portal. As a result, schools must have sufficient revenue-sharing and NIL resources not only to retain players but also to add roster depth, a reality Doeren called "sad to say, but that's where football is now."
In 14 seasons under Doeren, NC State finished with a 98-74 overall record. The Wolfpack recorded at least eight wins in five of the last six years and were bowl-eligible in 11 of his 14 seasons. As noted by Rodd Baxley of the Fayetteville Observer, part of the USA TODAY Network, Doeren is owed a buyout of $9.75 million for the three years remaining on his contract if fired without cause.

Doeren said also he leaves NC State with "no grudges."
"I leave here with no grudges. I completely love this place," Doeren said. "We (his wife, Sarah, and him) want to see this program shock the world. ... I'll always be cheering for the Wolfpack. I promise you that."
NC State running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel will serve as the Wolfpack's interim head coach for the remainder of the season, beginning with a three-game homestand that opens Saturday, Oct. 31, against Cal at noon ET.
