Rugged winger Kurtis MacDermid, who has yet to suit up for a game this season, cleared waivers at 2 p.m. Sunday and was assigned to the club’s American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville.
The Senators left for Las Vegas on Sunday morning to prepare to start a five-game road trip against the Golden Knights on Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena. They will skate on Monday in Vegas.
Goaltender Linus Ullmark, who is on injured reserve with an undisclosed lower-body strain, made the trip, along with captain Thomas Chabot, who skated in a non-contact jersey on Saturday. Chabot is expected to face the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday if all goes well.

MacDermid missed most of training camp with an undisclosed ailment and had only recently resumed skating with Ottawa. He wasn’t on the ice Saturday before the Senators’ 7-4 victory against the New York Rangers at home and was placed on waivers later in the day.
The Senators needed to clear roster space because the club currently has eight defencemen, 13 forwards and two goalies, which is the 23-man National Hockey League limit.
The move is a setback for the 32-year-old MacDermid.
The Senators acquired MacDermid from the New Jersey Devils before last season. He was brought in after the Senators and the Montreal Canadiens played a preseason game that featured several fights because Ottawa felt it needed more toughness to protect its star players.
MacDermid suited up for only 19 games last season, but Ottawa coach Travis Green has a soft spot for him. The veteran forward played for Green while he was the interim head coach of the Devils during the 2024-25 campaign after Lindy Ruff was fired.
He will now have to see if he can make an impression in Belleville to earn another opportunity in the National Hockey League. MacDermid has one year remaining on his contract at $1.15 million U.S.
Getting MacDermid’s salary off the books will leave the club with approximately $2.6 million in cap space, according to Puckpedia.
MacDermid lost his job on the fourth line to rugged winger Hayden Hodgson.
The club will have to make another move to activate Ullmark when he’s ready, but the Senators will send goaltender Jonas Johansson back to Belleville.
