RecompLauncher is a new website designed to make PC ports of older console games easier to find and access. More specifically, it focuses on so-called recompilations. This process translates a console game's original program code so that it can run on modern PC hardware without a traditional emulator.
The online catalog, which is already available, includes numerous well-known games such as The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, Sonic Unleashed, Skate 3 and Fable II. Forza Horizon, Silent Hill and The Wind Waker HD are also listed. However, not all of the featured ports are finished or playable yet.
The project comes from the team behind RecompStore, a homebrew store for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles. One of the developers introduced the new PC port website on Reddit on October 26. There are some legal considerations, however. Recompilation projects can raise copyright concerns, particularly when protected program code is distributed without permission or copy protection measures are bypassed.

Dedicated launcher planned
For now, the website serves as a central hub for community projects, making them easier for users to discover. Despite the name, RecompLauncher doesn't actually offer a launcher yet. However, one is already planned and is expected to handle the installation and updating of recompilation projects in the future.
It's worth noting that RecompLauncher isn't the first project to take this approach. Quiver already offers a working launcher capable of installing and automatically updating PC ports of older console games, putting it considerably further ahead in development. The RecompLauncher developer acknowledges on Reddit that Quiver is already an excellent solution. Nevertheless, he believes there's still plenty of untapped potential and wants to create an all-in-one platform that's as straightforward to use as possible. What specific advantages RecompLauncher will eventually offer over Quiver remains unclear.
As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
