What Happened
Flávio Bolsonaro, the senator who lost Brazil’s 25 October runoff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is reported to have left Brazil for the United States on Tuesday, 27 October. Earlier in the day his whereabouts were unknown, and Senator Rogério Marinho, a Bolsonaro ally, said, “We have no information.”
Federal Police sources say he arrived in the United States on Tuesday afternoon, and contacts at the White House told Brazilian reporters the same. No official source has confirmed his arrival.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court had ordered him on Monday to hand over his regular and diplomatic passports within 24 hours, as we reported. When the deadline passed on Tuesday morning without delivery, the Federal Police cancelled both documents.
The order belongs to a sealed Supreme Court inquiry into suspected money laundering and currency evasion, and no charge against Flávio Bolsonaro is known. His allies call the case political persecution.
What Washington Has Said
A senior State Department official, speaking anonymously, said the department will issue visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family and permit their entry into the United States. The official did not say whether he has already entered or whether he has asked for asylum.
Reports that Secretary of State Marco Rubio arranged the departure come from Federal Police sources and a Trump ally, and Washington has not confirmed them. Reports that the Trump administration is preparing asylum for him are also unconfirmed.
Argentina Denies He Passed Through
Argentina’s National Migration Directorate said it has no record of Flávio Bolsonaro entering the country and that no flight plan including members of his family was filed. The presidential spokesperson also said he had not entered and that no asylum request exists.
The denials followed reports about a private jet held at Puerto Iguazú, near the Brazilian border, where aviation authorities did not authorise takeoff. Brazil’s Federal Police also contacted Argentine authorities to check a possible flight.
Why It Matters
Planalto Palace’s international advisers acknowledge that his departure could strain relations with the Trump administration, but they say it is no reason to cut ties. Restoring a pragmatic relationship is a priority for Lula’s new term, with trade, unresolved tariffs and public security on the agenda.
For US readers the test is whether a visa promise turns into protection for a foreign politician who did not comply with a court order, and what that does to trade talks with Brazil. It is not known whether Brazil will seek his return.
What Is Not Known
It is not known where Flávio Bolsonaro is, how he left Brazil or whether he has entered the United States. Nor is it known whether he has applied for asylum.
It is not known whether the United States arranged or only tolerated his departure. The charges, if any, that follow from the sealed Supreme Court inquiry are also unknown.
